Job Goal

The purpose of this position is to coordinate the delivery of accommodations and support services, provide advocacy and support, and promote an accessible learning environment for students with disabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The following tasks represent the major duties performed in this role. Management may assign additional tasks as necessary.

  • Conduct interviews/intakes with students with disabilities to provide reasonable accommodations and to ensure equal access to education; collaborate with faculty to implement accommodations.
  • Administer procedures to provide disability support services in accordance with federal, state, and district regulations/policies (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and RCW 28B.10.910-16) regarding access and disability accommodation.
  • Develop accommodation plans and consult with faculty, advisors, and learning center coaches on implementation.
  • Develop and provide orientation, workshops/seminars, and other training for administrators, faculty, and staff to disseminate disability information and ensure compliance with the ADA and Section 504.
  • Maintain student records, documentation, data, and information with strict attention to accuracy and confidentiality in accordance with FERPA regulations.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate student mentors and work-study students assigned to the area.
  • Maintain and update departmental policies, information, and web resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation counseling, counseling, special education, social work, psychology, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three years of experience working with students with disabilities in a postsecondary setting preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of Section 504, ADA, FERPA, and other laws pertaining to higher education and disability.
  • Experience in supervision and management of staff and in budget management; strategic planning; and familiarity with state/federal requirements.
  • Ability to demonstrate respect for and sensitivity to a diverse population.

Essential Functions

  • Monitor financial resources for the department.
  • Participate in institutional planning, policy, procedural, and fiscal decisions affecting learning support for students.
  • Collaborate with area high schools and community agencies to assist students in transitioning into and out of college.
  • Provide consultation and act as an informational resource to staff and faculty regarding accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities; stay current with developments in the field.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services.
  • Coordinate course placement, learning support services, assistive technology, assessment, and accommodations for students with disabilities in partnership with college faculty and staff.
  • Engage in outreach to promote available services to prospective and enrolled students.
  • Provide campus leadership and advocacy regarding current laws and educational strategies related to the ADA as amended and Section 504.
  • Attend meetings of assigned committees and participate in other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate understanding of and commitment to the mission of NICC.
