Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required in chemical, physical or biologic science, medical technology or clinical laboratory science
  • 3–5 years of progressive responsibility in a lab setting
  • Demonstrated leadership, technical proficiency, and knowledge to coordinate lab quality and workload
  • Certification at technologist level (ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS or HEW) preferred
  • Working knowledge of statistics and Microsoft Office applications

Job description

We are seeking an individual with a strong interest in client relations and staff scheduling, as well as a desire to grow into a role that includes oversight of employee assignments, competency assessments, and record management. This individual will be responsible for maintaining positive customer relationships within ambulatory care settings while collaborating closely with the main laboratory at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital to support quality metrics, address operational deviations, and promote continuous improvement. Occasional travel to laboratory sites throughout the Jackson market may be required. The coordinator will also have the opportunity and expectation to participate in periodic CAP inspections, helping ensure the laboratory fulfills its responsibilities as an inspection unit. Additional duties and responsibilities will be assigned as the position and departmental needs continue to evolve.

General Summary

Reporting to Laboratory Director or Manager, coordinates daily operation of large or technically complex laboratory areas. Coordinates specimen processing, testing, and reporting to ensure standard work methods and consistent quality. Oversees employee assignments, competency, and record keeping. Leads daily management of quality and deviation management. Coordinates technical projects such as instrument evaluation and method validation.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities
  • Coordinates daily operations of the laboratory including scheduling employees and daily work assignments across large or technically complex sections of the lab. Ensures appropriate specimen accessioning, testing, and reporting to meet service standards.
  • Assists other laboratory staff and leaders to meet or exceed customer expectations. This often involves the use of quality management techniques to gather data and improve processes.
  • Compiles and maintains employee records including attendance, work assignments, performance records, proficiency testing, and competency records as required by accrediting agencies.
  • Coordinates activities and maintains records of preventive maintenance programs. 5. Coordinates the validation of new methods, instruments and software as required.

  • Organizes and participates in on-boarding of new employees and continuing education. May coordinate the rotation and training of Residents, Fellows, and students in clinical rotations.
  • Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment and improvement programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Monitors compliance with regulatory and accrediting requirements.
Education/Experience Required
  • Minimum of an accredited Bachelor\'s Degree Program in chemical, physical or biologic science, medical technology or clinical laboratory science required
  • Requires a demonstrated record of three to five years of progressive responsibility
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions and to coordinate the quality and volume of work
  • Certification at the technologist level from a nationally recognized national agency such as, ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS or HEW is preferred
  • Working knowledge of statistics, basic computer software and laboratory methodologies. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
