JOB DESCRIPTION: Human Resources announces an opening for 1.0 Early Childhood Coordinator with the Department of Academics; This is a full-time, 12-month (260-days), Grade E-14 position. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK The Early Childhood Coordinator works under the direction of the Director of Early Childhood and Elementary Education to assist in the coordination, supervision, implementation and evaluation of the Early Childhood Pre-Kindergarten programs as well as primary grades K-2. RESPONSIBILITIES: ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK (May not include all duties performed – These are intended as an illustration of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
- Assists the Director of Early Childhood and Elementary Education in early childhood program development and implementation
- Supervises and manages the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) including grant writing, budget management, coordination of outside services including dental, health and social services
- Coordinates professional development to VPI, primary Montessori, and primary teachers
- Assists Pre-K and primary teachers in the areas of instructional strategies, curriculum, and assessment.
- Collaborates with the Special Education Pre-K program to integrate students identified with special needs, and to provide professional development for instructional staff
- Interviews potential teaching candidates and assists with the hiring process for both the VPI and primary Montessori programs
- Facilitates the adoption and implementation of pre-kindergarten curriculum in VPI and primary Montessori
- Coordinates Pre-K and Kindergarten Summer School Programs
- Develops and implements parent engagement events; collaborates with Title I
- Works with parents and private providers to answer questions and assist in planning for entry to the Arlington Public Schools
- Conducts formal observations of VPI, Montessori and less frequently K-2 teachers
- Serves on local and state committees addressing issues relevant to young children, their families including Smart Beginnings Alexandria Arlington
- Reviews and evaluates instructional materials
- Work with local early childhood programs to ensure children have experiences that will lead to school success.
- Work with parents to answer questions and assist in planning for their child’s successful entry to public school. EXPERIENCE: REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Experience working with students, families, and staff from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Bilingual skills preferred but not required
- Familiarity with and knowledge of the Pre-K-5 curriculum, including an understanding of early literacy and numeracy.
- Ability to relate productively with elementary classroom teachers, school administrators, and supervisors.
- Experience conducting staff development.
- Ability to speak and write effectively.
- Ability to manage and monitor state grant budget QUALIFICATIONS: QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of or eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional Certificate with an endorsement in Early Childhood or related field and an endorsement in Administration and Supervision Pre-K-12.
- At least three years successful teaching in an Early Childhood classroom.
