The City of Chicago is seeking a Coordinating Engineer I to oversee planning, design, and construction for infrastructure and buildings. This role coordinates field surveys, interfaces with engineers and consultants, and ensures projects stay on schedule and within budget.
Under direction, you will supervise engineers, manage contracts, and prepare reports for management and funding agencies while supporting grant applications and program improvements.

Bureau of Architecture and Construction
Number of Positions:1Starting Salary: $119,472 annually; Grade: GY-12Applications for this position will be accepted until 11:59pm CDT on Friday, September 11, 2026.Under direction, the class coordinates and supervises the work of an engineering section responsible for the planning, design and monitoring of construction on infrastructure and building projects, or functions as a project manager for a major engineering project of considerable scope and complexity; and performs related duties as required.
Additional duties may be required for this position
Hours: Monday – Friday; 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. (Must be flexible to early and/or late meetings)
THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM CAREER SERVICE.Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, plus five (5) years of work experience in the planning, design, and construction management of engineering projects, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, OR
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree or higher in Engineering, plus four (4) years of work experience in the planning, design, and construction management of engineering projects, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position.
Depending upon department assignment, field of engineering may vary. Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) is required. At the time of employment, positions must have obtained Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) in the State of Illinois.
A valid State of Illinois driver’s license required at the time of hire.
