Job summary

The Claremont Colleges Services is seeking a Cook II – Baker in Claremont, CA to bake breads, cakes, pastries, and specialty desserts from scratch for daily meals and catering.   • Solid knowledge of food sanitation policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency with arithmetic involving fractions, decimals, and the metric system.

Responsibilities

  • Bake items from scratch per the bakery prep sheet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Bake breads, muffins, cakes, cookies, bars, pies, and specialty desserts, including mousses, cheesecakes, roulades, napoleons, fruit tarts, macaroons, crème brûlées, and breakfast pastries.
  • Prepare vegan and gluten-free options from scratch each day.
  • Prepare baked goods for catering events and fine dining items.
  • Set up the baking cart each day for the next shift.
  • Coordinate baker’s prep with the baking team, Sous Chefs, and Executive Chef.
  • Complete assigned items on production lists and communicate completions to the Sous and Executive Chef.
  • Clean station and equipment regularly during the shift and at shift end, following the sanitation schedule.
  • Calibrate ovens and scales regularly to ensure product consistency.
  • Introduce new ideas to the baking department through customer interactions and independent research.
  • Prepare pizza dough and bake pizzas.
  • Prepare and execute ‘action station’ desserts during meal services throughout the week.
  • Follow all food preparation and sanitation directives established by the Health Department and internal policies.
  • Maintain a safe work area and adhere to the agreed work schedule.

Job Summary

The Cook II – Baker is responsible for baking items in the bakery for meal services and catering. The role includes preparing breads, muffins, cakes, cookies, bars, pies, specialty desserts, and vegan and gluten‑free options daily. The successful candidate coordinates with the Sous and Executive Chef on new baked items, works from scratch, and follows strict food safety techniques.

Essential Functions
  • Bake items from scratch per the bakery prep sheet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Bake breads, muffins, cakes, cookies, bars, pies, and specialty desserts, including mousses, cheesecakes, roulades, napoleons, fruit tarts, macaroons, crème brûlées, and breakfast pastries.
  • Prepare vegan and gluten‑free options from scratch each day.
  • Prepare baked goods for catering events and fine dining items.
  • Set up the baking cart each day for the next shift.
  • Ensure the opening team has prepped and finished baked goods.
  • Coordinate baker’s prep with the baking team, Sous Chefs, and Executive Chef.
  • Complete assigned items on production lists and communicate completions to the Sous and Executive Chef.
  • Clean station and equipment regularly during the shift and at shift end, following the sanitation schedule.
  • Calibrate ovens and scales regularly to ensure product consistency.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent education, training, or experience.
  • Prior baking experience in a fast‑paced commercial kitchen.
  • California Food Handlers Card required.
  • Ability to bake from scratch.
  • Solid knowledge of food sanitation policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency with arithmetic involving fractions, decimals, and the metric system.
  • Initiative, respectful and courteous attitude toward coworkers, customers, and guests.
  • Strong communication skills, professional demeanor, and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills; ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, stretch, squat, reach, and lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist level without assistance.
Work Hours

The regular hours align with a 9‑month academic calendar, totaling 40 hours per week, 5 days per week. Overtime, holiday, weekend, and evening work may be required. The schedule may vary based on department needs and a flexible schedule is expected.

Compensation

Approximate pay range: $23.00 – $26.00 per hour.
