Job Purpose
The Dietary Aide assists with food preparation according to procedural guidelines, under the supervision of the Food Service/Dietary Manager or Supervisor. The Cook prepares nutritious, appealing meals in compliance with policies, regulations, and resident needs, ensuring proper temperature and timing. Works with the Director of Food Service to allocate resources efficiently to meet residents’ nutritional and quality of life needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in meal preparation, including salads, desserts, snacks, and between-meal nourishments.
• Follow diet and NPO orders accurately.
• Serve nourishments and record menu substitutions as per guidelines.
• Properly store leftovers and open food items.
• Maintain infection control policies.
• Deliver trays, assist with serving beverages, and maintain dining area cleanliness.
• Clean and maintain kitchen and dining equipment and work areas.
• Record temperatures of refrigerators and freezers, and operate dishwashing and food prep equipment safely.
• Manage food supplies and assist in tray line setup and service.
• Follow recipes and prepare meals that meet nutritional and aesthetic standards.
• Supervise kitchen staff assisting with food prep and cleaning.
• Prepare substitutes for residents’ dietary preferences and inspect trays for acceptance.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Participate in surveys and required reporting.
• Engage in ongoing education and maintain certifications.
• Respect residents’ rights and adhere to compliance and safety protocols.
• Handle food safely, follow emergency procedures, and report hazards or injuries promptly.
• Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and respect for residents’ dignity.
• Follow standardized recipes and facility policies for safety and infection control.

Minimum Education Required: Sufficient literacy skills.

Minimum Experience Required: At least one year of institutional food service experience as a cook.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in long-term care food production.
