UIC Bowhead Transport, LLC (BTC) is a subsidiary of Ukpeagvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC), a Northern Alaska Native (8A). BTC provides marine cargo transportation, lightering, environmental and research support, and logistics services. JOB SUMMARY: The deckhand is responsible for assisting work on deck; inclusive of line handling, performing deck and engine security rounds, assigned security duties and emergency duties, and other duties as required by the Vessel Master. Cooking duties include preparing home-style meals for crew members and occasional guests of the vessel.
Essential Functions of AB/OS Deckhand
- Good seamanship skills including the ability and knowledge for proper vessel line handling; tying, throwing, cleaning, coiling, and stowing properly.
- Knowledge of vessel security and emergency procedures for duties as assigned by vessel master or mate.
- Other duties as assigned by vessel master or mate.
- Adheres to Company Policies, USCG, and Environmental Regulations.
- Representing the organization to guests, customers, the public, government, and other external sources.
Essential Functions of Cook
- Overall responsible for daily sanitation, inventory, and upkeep of equipment for galley area; lockers, and storerooms.
- Serve three balanced meals per day to crew, and occasionally guests.
- Must be able to follow recipes and develop recipes when improvising is necessary.
- Sanitation and safety compliant, ensuring that every precaution is taken to prevent contamination.
- Responsible for requisitioning, preparing, production, and presentation of all meals. Ensuring that the dining areas, salad, dessert, beverages, and condiments are set prior to the beginning of each meal, and ensuring sanitation standards and personal hygiene are maintained at all times.
- Provisions management, including ordering and returning unused food items to the bulk storeroom, properly stored and labeled.
Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise
- Knowledge of health code, proper food handling, preparation, cooking and storage temperatures, and safety procedures for conduct in the galley.
- Communication and writing skills required.
- Strong interpersonal/team skills and the proven ability to often deal with situations where immediate low-level satisfactory resolution of issues must be achieved.
- Proficient user of computer systems, with the ability to utilize MS software applications in a Windows environment.
- Imperative to this position, the successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, and a positive management style that builds trust with clients and crew members.
Requirements
- Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC).
- USCG rating as an Ordinary Seaman or Able Bodied Seaman with STCW-95 endorsement including Basic Safety Training.
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Valid Driver License.
- U.S. Citizenship and U.S. Valid Passport.
- Rotational Schedule: 30-60 days on and off depending on the job. Work shifts are 6/6/6/6 hours on and off throughout the day.
- Specialized experience: 2 years of Chef/Cook experience with shipboard experience.
- Successfully completed MSC Food Service Management System (FSM).
- Current Serv-Safe Certification.
- Or, a current certification as an Executive Chef or higher from the American Culinary Federation.
- Or, Graduate of an accredited commercial academy/school, and has completed training in nutrition, and is Serv-Safe Manager certified.
Environmental Conditions
- Cramped; confined spaces.
- May work in fog; dark; and other visibility limiting conditions.
- May be exposed to fuels; solvents; cleaners; dust; fumes; smoke; and gases.
- Will work on vessels in adverse weather conditions.
- Irregular working hours.
- Vibrations from vessel engines and Arctic marine environment including low temperatures, high wind, icing, plenty of moisture, and wave action.
- Frequent hazards include hypothermia; pinch points; sprains; strains; slips; falls; concussive impacts; and lifting injuries.
Physical Demands
- Employee must be able to write in English; read in English; calculate; have estimation skills; possess good verbal presentation and be able to communicate using the radio; speaker; or electronic communication by using the English language.
- Repetitive and prolonged postures involving standing; sitting; twisting; squatting; kneeling; stooping and reaching to full range from above the head to the deck.
- Employee must have the ability to move extremities and spine through full physiological range of motion that will permit the employee to work in a variety of postures.
- Employee must have good dexterity and frequently use one and two hands throughout the work period for grasping and fingering while using controls of the vessel; hand tools and performing other activities requiring good dexterity.
- Employee must have sufficient cardiorespiratory fitness to occasionally perform medium-heavy physical labor involving the ability to sit and/or stand for 6 hour shifts; walk for prolonged periods; handle various materials and tools; climb ladders; stairwells; and pushknees while working in inclement weather.
- Must be able to lift at least 65 lbs. from floor to knuckles level, waist level, shoulder level, and crown level on a daily basis.
