Job summary

The Salvation Army in Detroit is seeking a Cook to prepare meals for internal events, maintain kitchen cleanliness, and ensure ServSafe compliance. You will contribute to menu planning using donated and purchased items and support food service for multiple programs.

Responsibilities include ordering supplies, recording deliveries, and delivering excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment. A valid driver’s license and forklift or MVR checks may be required by location.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
• 1+ years’ professional cooking experience preferred.
• ServSafe certification required within 1 year.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and pass MVR check.

Position Summary:

The Cook's responsibilities include preparing food for the Corps internal events, to comply with the meal pattern requirements. The cook is responsible for keeping the kitchen properly cleaned, food ordering, inventory, creating menus and provides excellent customer service.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Create menus using donated foods and purchased items
• Preparing food for all program and Corps events
• Maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the kitchen
• Adhering to ServSafe food handling regulations
• Orders all food and program supplies
• Ensures food orders and deliveries are recorded and put away
• Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Responsibilities:

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

• High school diploma or GED, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
• 1+ years’ experience professional cooking experience preferred

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

• Knowledge of safe food handling guidelines, to include:
  • Cross contamination
  • Proper storage
  • Proper rotation
  • Proper preparation

Computer Skills:

• Basic knowledge in Microsoft Office 365
• Basic computer operation knowledge
• Working knowledge of TEAMS and SharePoint
• Willingness to learn new software as needed

Certificates and Licenses:

• Current ServSafe Certification, or gain it within 1 year
• Complete Safe From Harm training, and keep current as needed
• Must have and maintain a current valid driver’s license and pass the Salvation Army Motor Vehicle Record check (MVR)
