Job summary

Sonoco is seeking an Industrial Controls Technician in Dayton, NJ to maintain and troubleshoot plant equipment, focusing on electrical and PLC systems up to 480 volts. Reporting to Maintenance Supervisor, you will drive reliability and support continuous operations.

Qualified candidates have 3-5 years in industry, strong AB PLC knowledge, and hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley and Beckhoff components. The role requires problem-solving, documentation, and willingness to work irregular hours

Qualifications

• 3-5 years’ experience in industrial setting with electrical/PLCs.
• Strong electronic and PLC skills; proficient with AB applications.
• Familiarity with Allen Bradley PLCs and Servo drives; Beckhoff knowledge a plus.
• Proficient understanding of software, programming languages, and printed logic.
• Ability to write, rewrite and create operating programs.
• Understanding of current applications and systems, mechanical and electrical.
• Proficient computer skills and word processing.
• Strong general math skills.

Responsibilities

• Pass electrical skills and safety testing to become qualified Category 2 worker.
• Maintain electrical and PLC systems up to 480 volts.
• Document PLC programs, drive parameters, and supporting software.
• Maintain hardware, set up systems, and evaluate applications.
• Provide PLC training within the department.
• Identify obsolete systems and report solutions with scope and costs.
• Participate in process improvement and new installations.
• Perform PM, project work, and maintenance as needed.
• Be available on weekends or nights if required.
• Coordinate with site MRO on electronic spares inventory.

Location: Dayton, NJ
Wage: $38.39 - $47.35 / hour ( Based on Experience)
Shift: 1st shift M-F

Reporting directly to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Industrial Controls Technician is responsible for achieving a high level of reliability for plant equipment through performing tasks required to maintain equipment and minimize downtime. This individual will use their training and knowledge to perform equipment/process/system maintenance, troubleshoot equipment, make repairs, and identify and implement opportunities for improvement.

What you’ll be doing:

• Must be able to pass electrical skills and safety testing to become a qualified Category 2 worker. Must be capable of performing electrical work on systems up to 480 Volts.
• As the resident electronic and PLC resource, you will be responsible for:
• Establishing and maintaining accurate, current and secure documentation of printed logic, PLC programs, drive parameters, electronic files and supporting software.
• Maintenance, system set-up and selection of supporting hardware.
• Application evaluation of electronic systems and software.
• Facilitate electronic and PLC training within the department.
• Seek out and identify obsolete, unsupported or otherwise deficient systems. Research and identify solutions then report, prepare scope of work and cost estimates to resolve.
• Actively participate in process improvement, new installation and make ready related to electronic, PLC or mechanical projects.
• Will function as a maintenance technician as needed, responsible for PM duties, project work and scheduled or breakdown maintenance, when situation dictates.
• Expected to be a resource on weekends or nights as needed.
• Work with the site MRO Coordinator concerning inventory management of related electronic spares.

• You will need 3-5 years’ experience within an industrial setting where your focus was heavily with electrical and PLCs
• You must have strong electronic and PLC skills, proficient knowledge of AB applications.
• Familiarity with Allen Bradley PLCs and Servo drives, Beckhoff PLC knowledge a plus.
• Proficient understanding of applicable software, program language and printed logic
• Programming, capable of writing, re-writing and creating new operating programs.
• Understanding of current applications and systems, mechanical and electrical
• Proficient computer skills, word processing and software understanding
• Strong general math skills
