Job summary

Redwood Materials is seeking a qualified Controls Technician to install, troubleshoot, and maintain controls hardware across production and facilities. You will service PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, and automation components to keep plant operations reliable and efficient.

Collaborate with engineering and maintenance to drive continuous improvements. Responsibilities include wiring control panels, calibrations, system upgrades, and documenting changes.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, controls, or instrumentation.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and sensors.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation.
  • Hands-on experience fabricating and wiring control panels to meet design, quality, and safety standards.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, mechanical, and automated manufacturing equipment to minimize downtime and maximize production efficiency.
  • Fabricate, modify, and upgrade electrical control panels in accordance with engineering specifications and safety standards.
  • Perform field wiring of instrumentation and motor controls to ensure proper installation and optimal system functionality.
  • Conduct and document maintenance calibrations, fault diagnosis, and repairs on electronic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
  • Interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and technical documentation to perform advanced troubleshooting and system analysis.
  • Support equipment commissioning, process improvements, and system upgrades alongside cross-functional engineering and operations teams.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including updates to control logic, wiring diagrams, and calibration data while adhering to safety and compliance protocols.

Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Position Summary

The Controls Technician plays a key role in implementing and maintaining controls hardware, instrumentation, and electrical equipment across production and facility systems. In this position, you will troubleshoot and repair PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, and automation components to ensure reliable and efficient plant operations. You will support equipment commissioning, execute system upgrades, and collaborate with engineering and maintenance teams to drive continuous improvements in process performance.

Key Responsibilities

Troubleshoot and repair electrical, mechanical, and automated manufacturing equipment to minimize downtime and maximize production efficiency.

  • Fabricate, modify, and upgrade electrical control panels in accordance with engineering specifications and safety standards.

Perform field wiring of instrumentation and motor controls to ensure proper installation and optimal system functionality.

Conduct and document maintenance calibrations, installations, fault diagnosis, and repairs on electronic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.

Interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and technical documentation to perform advanced troubleshooting and system analysis.

Support equipment commissioning, process improvements, and system upgrades alongside cross-functional engineering and operations teams.

Maintain accurate records of work performed, including updates to control logic, wiring diagrams, and calibration data while adhering to safety and compliance protocols.

Basic Qualifications

4+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, controls, or instrumentation within a manufacturing or process environment.

Proven proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and industrial sensors.

Strong skills in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation.

Hands-on experience fabricating and wiring control panels to meet design, quality, and safety standards.

Solid understanding of motor controls, instrumentation wiring, calibration procedures, and pneumatic/mechanical system integration.

Proactive problem-solving skills with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent, safely, and successfully with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards .

Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards .

Working Conditions

Environment: Office and industrial/manufacturing facility environment (indoors/outdoors) .

Ability to work in challenging working conditions, which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes while protected by PPE for extended periods .

Essential physical requirements such as climbing, standing, stooping, lifting, precision hand motion, or typing .

Occasional work weekends, nights, or on-call availability as part of regular operations .

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
