Job summary

Johnson Controls in San Diego, CA is seeking a seasoned Controls Service Technician Team Lead to oversee service, design, configuration, and operation of complete HVAC building control systems and related low-voltage subsystems. You will lead field technicians, coordinate routes, and ensure high-quality, safe execution across sites.

The role emphasizes technical depth, team leadership, customer communication, and collaboration with sales and service operations to meet client commitments.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of experience with programming, installing, and/or commissioning controls systems, including system-level controllers.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the construction, service mechanical, electrical, or HVAC service industry.
• Strong understanding of mechanical drawings, electrical wiring diagrams, control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems, and related building subsystems.
• Demonstrated experience integrating low-voltage building sub-systems using industry protocols such as Modbus, LON, and BACnet.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical audiences such as customers, consultants, sales partners, and field teams.

Role Overview

Under general direction, you will be responsible for the service and repair, design, configuration, and operation of complete HVAC building control systems and other low-voltage control sub-systems. This role combines technical execution with team leadership, including technician coordination, route planning, performance support, customer communication, and operational review. You will help ensure systems are designed, commissioned, and serviced to meet customer needs and Johnson Controls goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the service, repair, design, configuration, and operation of HVAC building control systems and low-voltage sub-systems such as lighting, nurse call, and data networks.
• Develop complex software programs and support commissioning, troubleshooting, and validation to ensure proper system operation.
• Create and coordinate flow diagrams, sequences of operation, bills of material, network layouts, electrical schematics, and related submittal documents.
• Support day-to-day field technician activities, plan monthly routes, and help deploy resources effectively across assigned work.
• Analyze team and account performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and recommend changes that support profitability, safety, and client satisfaction.
• Coordinate with sales, service operations, subcontractors, and other trades to support bids, installation efforts, and customer commitments.
• Select, order, and track materials for assigned jobs and support loading, commissioning, and system handoff activities.
• Provide field change information for as-built drawings and software updates, and keep management and customers informed of progress and issues.
• Support site-specific training for owners and operators on the building control system.
• Provide work direction, coaching, and performance support to technicians and other assigned team members as needed.
• Maintain a strong focus on safety compliance and high standards of regard for employees, subcontractors, and customers.

• Stay close to the work by understanding site conditions, removing obstacles for technicians, and keeping customers informed throughout execution.

• Win as one team by building trust across sales, service, management subcontractors, and other trades.
• Supervise assigned teams, establish developmental plans, and provide regular coaching, including monthly one-on-ones, operational reviews, and financial reviews.
• Monitor business plans, delivery consistency, and operational standards while supporting the achievement of contractual obligations and customer satisfaction goals.
• Review bids and estimates for accuracy, participate in release meetings, and support value engineering where it improves cost effectiveness without sacrificing quality.
• Use branch personnel and management resources effectively to balance customer needs, workforce capability, and business performance.
• Identify market or account opportunities and share them with the appropriate branch or region resource for strategic direction.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of experience with programming, installing, and/or commissioning controls systems, including system-level controllers.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the construction, service mechanical, electrical, or HVAC service industry.
• Strong understanding of mechanical drawings, electrical wiring diagrams, control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems, and related building subsystems.
• Demonstrated experience integrating low-voltage building sub-systems using industry protocols such as Modbus, LON, and BACnet.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical audiences such as customers, consultants, sales partners, and field teams.
• Advanced computer skills, including computer-related drafting tools such as Visio.
• Experience leading, coaching, or coordinating field technicians and supporting team performance.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Nice to Have Bachelor's degree in engineering or an associate degree in a related technical field with ten years of relevant work experience.
• Understanding of IP networking for building automation systems.

HIRING HOURLY RANGE

HIRING HOURLY RANGE: $41.34 - $56.87 per hour (Hourly rate to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This position includes a competitive benefits package. The posted salary range reflects the target compensation for this role.
