Controls Project Manager – HVAC

Johnson Controls delivers building technologies and HVAC solutions that help customers create safer, more comfortable, and more efficient environments. In this role, you will lead controls projects from the jobsite and help ensure each project is executed with strong technical quality, clear communication, and disciplined financial control.

Role Overview

As a Controls Project Manager for our HVAC division, you will act as the on-site leader for assigned controls projects, guiding work from planning through commissioning and closeout. You will coordinate internal teams, subcontractors, and customers to deliver complete systems on time, within scope, and with a strong balance between customer satisfaction and project profitability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead assigned HVAC controls projects through hardware design, system programming, installation coordination, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Coordinate day-to-day execution with subcontractors, electrical installers, technicians, designers, and administrative support as needed.
  • Manage project financial performance, including costs, billings, collections, cash flow, and gross margin.
  • Maintain regular communication with customers throughout all phases of the project and support the development of long-term relationships.
  • Review contractual scope, evaluate field directives, bulletins, and schedule changes, and pursue change orders when additional work is identified.
  • Coordinate procurement activities, including material selection, ordering, vendor pricing, availability, and delivery schedules.
  • Oversee loading, device verification, system checkout, and commissioning of system controllers and related equipment.
  • Validate complete system functionality, resolve issues, and ensure the final installation performs to project requirements.
  • Prepare accurate as-built records, commissioning documentation, manuals, and warranty documentation.
  • Provide site-specific training for owners and operators on system operation and use.
  • Attend job progress meetings, report project status, and provide forecasts for revenue, costs, and margin as required.
  • Ensure work is completed in compliance with applicable safety standards and legal requirements.
How You Will Do It
  • Own each project with accountability, safety, and integrity, making sure commitments are met and work is completed to the required standard.
  • Stay close to the jobsite and the customerby actively managing communication, resolving issues quickly, and removing barriers to progress.
  • Use disciplined planning and clear follow-throughto keep scope, schedule, cost, and quality aligned from start to finish.
  • Improve every day through candid problem-solving, accurate documentation, and timely escalation of risks or changes.
  • Win as one teamby working collaboratively with customers, subcontractors, vendors, and Johnson Controls colleagues.
  • Translate technical details into practical updates for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Balance customer expectations with project financial results by tracking billings, collections, and budget performance closely.
  • Support crew development through coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance when needed.
  • Follow established Johnson Controls standards for installation, commissioning, and field execution.
Qualifications
  • Technical associate degree with four years of field experience, or six years of equivalent related field experience in the HVAC or Building Automation industry.
  • Hands-on experience in systems design and commissioning of digital HVAC or Building Automation controls systems.
  • HVAC controls knowledge and a solid understanding of control theory and HVAC or Building Automation systems.
  • Customer communication experience, along with strong organizational skills and a proven ability to lead projects.
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical material to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Computer proficiency in Windows, Excel, and related business tools.
  • Understanding of project accounting, costing principles, and contracting.
  • Commitment to high standards of safety and ethical conduct.
Nice to Have
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or equivalent experience in the HVAC industry.
  • Experience preparing project status reports for upper management.
  • Experience with project billings, collections, subcontractor payment processes, or change order management.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $89,400 - $134,250 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience,knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with marketdata.) This role offers a competitive Bonus plan that will take into account individual, group,and corporate performance. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
