Job summary

Convergix Automation Solutions is seeking a Controls Engineering Manager to lead the controls hardware and software group for the Industrials division. You’ll ensure on-time delivery, drive engineering excellence, and leverage PEM processes across projects.

The role involves design, programming, commissioning of PLCs, motion control, and vision systems for industrial automation. Travel within the US and Canada is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, etc.)

The Role

The Controls Engineering Manager is accountable for the controls hardware and software group execution performance of the Industrials division in terms of achieving functional targets, beating project budgets, ensuring on-time delivery of scope, and delivering engineering excellence leveraging our PEM process. As a technical professional, you will provide support to the design, programming and commissioning of controls systems of projects including PLC’s, motion control and vision systems for the Industrials industry. Typically, equipment is assembled at the Convergix Michigan facility, tested thoroughly (FAT), then installed at our customer site where it is tested again (SAT) and validated with the assistance of Convergix resources. This position reports to Vice President, Controls Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the controls design group to meet functional targets, budgets, and timelines, ensuring engineering excellence through milestone reviews and strategic problem-solving.
• Approve and enforce compliance with documented engineering processes, and drive alignment across business units through standardized practices and tools.
• Stay current with industry trends, lead technology research, and implement innovative solutions that enhance Convergix’s competitive edge.
• Allocate and manage technical resources to meet project demands, monitor capacity and chargeability, and escalate staffing needs when necessary.
• Coach and mentor team members, lead performance reviews, support training initiatives, and participate in recruitment and onboarding.
• Partner with sales, applications, and systems design teams to develop inventive solutions, clear specifications, and support commercial strategies.
• Review customer standards and URS documents, ensuring alignment with operational excellence and regulatory requirements (e.g., IQ/OQ/PQ).
• Collaborate globally to develop standardized controls/software templates and drive consistency across projects and teams.
• Maintain and improve engineering tools and systems to support business development strategies and operational capacity.
• Develop and manage relationships with outsourced resources to augment internal capabilities while maintaining quality standards.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, etc.)
• Strong knowledge of Industrial manufacturing processes and specific project examples of successful outcomes.
• Ability to leverage past personal process integration experiences to bring innovative solutions to the Industrials division.
• Strong technical and project management skills – an overall well-rounded skill set (technology, people, business acumen, etc.)
• Amazing interpersonal skills within a multi-disciplinary team and diverse customers
• Reliable transportation and an ability to travel; Controls Engineering Manager should have the ability to travel within the US and Canada
• Tenacity to solve problems and take ownership of solutions with a sense of urgency.
• Direct experience in programming and troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, vision systems, robotics, web handling, complex precision motion control, crimping, laser ablation/welding/finishing, swaging, material joining, dispensing, reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical drawings.
• Proficient with cycle time analysis/simulations, process and flow breakdowns, and the development of critical requirements / specifications to drive design solutions.
• Experience with compliance to equipment design standards (i.e. ANSI, CSA, OSHA, CE, etc.), IQ, OQ, PQ protocols, ability to develop/interpret test scripts to aid in equipment validation, UL/CE certifications and compliance.
• Deep understanding of Automation Equipment and process controllers such as PLCs, Robots, and Conveyance systems.
• Knowledgeable with Servos, Presses, Drives, HMI, Actuators, Pneumatics, Hydraulics, Vision and Sensors, SCADA and MES
• Familiarity and/or proficiency with SolidWorks, ePLAN, Rockwell, Siemens, Ignition and AutoCAD is a plus.
• Passion for engineering, robotics, and automation equipment in the Industrials industry and proven ability to teach/ motivate/ develop team members while acting as a mentor.
• Ability to explain detailed engineering concepts and ideas to a wide audience of people.
