Job summary

Schenck USA Corp. is seeking a highly skilled Controls Engineer to design, program, and optimize advanced machinery and equipment in a manufacturing setting.

The role requires hands-on expertise in electrical control systems, PLC/HMI programming, and project documentation. Based in Southfield, MI with up to 30% travel, you will collaborate across departments to meet schedules and budgets, support startup and field service, and implement improvements using new technologies.

Qualifications

  • Requires a 4 year degree in engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years hands-on controls engineering in industrial automation or custom machinery.
  • Experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley and Siemens).
  • Strong knowledge of electrical controls, networking, pneumatics, hydraulics, and machine safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical control systems and schematics for custom automation equipment using AutoCAD/EPLAN.
  • Program, modify, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI systems (Allen-Bradley/Siemens).
  • Develop and maintain controls documentation, BOMs, and project records.
  • Manage controls activities to support schedules, budgets, and performance goals.
  • Review customer requirements and drawings to ensure successful project execution.
  • Develop functional specifications and support testing, commissioning, and customer acceptance.

Must be a U.S. person.

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field.

Minimum of 5 years of hands‑on controls engineering experience in industrial automation, custom machinery, machine design, or test equipment manufacturing.

Proficiency with PLC programming and troubleshooting, including Allen‑Bradley and Siemens platforms, plus HMI development.

Experience designing electrical control systems and schematics using AutoCAD or EPLAN.

Strong knowledge of electrical controls, industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet), pneumatics, hydraulics, and machine safety standards.

Experience commissioning, troubleshooting, and supporting automated equipment in a manufacturing environment.

Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, and project management skills with the ability to work directly with customers and cross‑functional teams.

Ability to travel up to 30% domestically and internationally , including any required training.
