About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Engineer to design instrumentation and control (I&C) systems for advanced commercial nuclear power plants and test facilities. The scope includes reactor protection, safety-related systems, augmented-quality systems, plant investment protection, and non-safety-related balance-of-plant systems across advanced light water, liquid metal, and high-temperature gas reactors.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, evaluate, and manage engineering solutions for plant I&C systems.
- Apply control theory, mathematical modeling, and simulation to develop control logic, operating boundaries, feedback algorithms, and hardware/software requirements.
- Design reactor protection, emergency core cooling, engineered safety features, neutron monitoring, reactivity control, feedwater, cooling, isolation, and supporting plant systems.
- Lead or support engineering activities from front-end engineering design through conceptual, preliminary, and final detailed design.
- Prepare specifications, requirements, reports, databases, equipment lists, set points, load data, and physical equipment layouts.
- Develop functional block diagrams, flow diagrams, ladder logic, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, communication/network diagrams, and simulation models.
- Maintain rigorous requirements management, change control, and configuration management.
- Select appropriate I&C hardware and software platforms.
- Collaborate across disciplines to meet functional, performance, reliability, availability, and maintainability goals using FMEA, probabilistic risk analysis, and related methods.
- Prepare procurement packages and oversee suppliers’ implementation, qualification, testing, and compliance activities.
- Develop and review unit, module, system, integration, and factory acceptance testing for distributed control systems.
- Coordinate with project management, engineering partners, construction teams, and suppliers.
- Mentor team members and deliver work that meets technical requirements, budget, schedule, and nuclear safety and quality expectations.
Must-Have Qualifications & Technical Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Software, or Systems Engineering; Computer Science/Technology; Physics; Chemistry; Mathematics; or an equivalent four-year technical degree.
- 10 years of experience in heavy or highly regulated industries such as nuclear, power, process, marine, oil and gas, military, aerospace, medical, or pharmaceutical.
- 10 years of experience developing system requirements, specifications, documentation, and detailed design artifacts using digital tools.
- 10 years of experience developing engineering diagrams, physics-based algorithms, simulations, and models.
- 10 years of experience applying IEC standards in the 60xxx, 61xxx, and 62xxx series.
- 10 years of experience using PC productivity tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, and Visio.
- 10 years of experience in the design, application, requisition, or field engineering of safety-significant instrumentation, control, and monitoring systems.
- 5 years of experience in application, requisition, or field engineering involving PLC and/or DCS platforms for complex, real-time, software-intensive systems.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications & Skills
- Professional Engineer credentials in Control Systems or an Ontario P.Eng. license.
- PMP certification or MBA.
- Nuclear analog and digital I&C experience, including safety-related hardware/software, instrument set points, calibration, environmental and seismic qualification, field services, or plant start-ups.
- Experience with nuclear regulatory requirements, design certification, and licensing under US NRC or international frameworks.
