Job summary

Smiths Group plc is seeking a Controls Engineer to design, program, commission, and support industrial control systems for manufacturing and automation environments. You will lead PLC/HMI/SCADA development across multiple platforms and collaborate with customers, sales, engineering, and quality teams.

The role emphasizes safety, continuous improvement, and LEAN problem-solving practices, with responsibilities spanning design, testing, and startup at customer facilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics or related field.
• Minimum 3 years of industry experience in automation/controls engineering.
• Hands-on programming and troubleshooting across PLC, HMI/SCADA platforms.
• CAD experience with electrical schematic tools (AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN).
• Knowledge of electrical safety practices and lockout/tagout procedures.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop industrial control panels to UL standards.
• Create layouts, schematics, wiring diagrams, and BOMs using CAD tools.
• Select and specify PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, safety devices, and networking gear.
• Program PLCs and HMI/SCADA systems (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Emerson, ABB).
• Implement control strategies, testing, FAT/SAT, and commissioning at sites.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related

3+ years in industrial automation/controls

Hands-on PLC/HMI/SCADA programming

Electrical safety & LOTO proficiency
