Job description

What You Can Expect

At ENGIE, we support safe, reliable, and efficient energy operations—and that includes the control systems that keep critical infrastructure running. As an Industrial Controls Engineer II, you\'ll design, program, and support industrial control systems (ICS) and the industrial networks that connect them across the University of Iowa utility system, a complex multi-plant campus environment.

This is an on-site, hands-on engineering role in Iowa City. You\'ll be a key technical contributor within the Controls Engineering Team (CET), supporting both O&M activities and capital projects (CAPEX) — from troubleshooting and optimization to system upgrades and expansions.

Working closely with engineers, technicians, and ICS security stakeholders, you\'ll improve operational performance, reliability, and security through applied controls expertise—while ensuring changes integrate safely into live operating environments.

What You\'ll Do
Controls Engineering & System Design
  • Design, develop, program, and support ICS/PLC/HMI solutions, including control logic, sequences, specifications, drawings, and technical documentation
  • Review design and construction packages for controls upgrades/expansions and ensure seamless integration into existing systems
  • Provide engineering support across site-wide CAPEX initiatives, including scope development and technical review
Operational Support & Troubleshooting
  • Partner with technicians and operations teams to troubleshoot complex control system issues and restore safe, reliable performance
  • Provide engineering-level guidance on equipment selection, troubleshooting approaches, cost estimates, and implementation plans
  • Apply root cause analysis to prevent repeat failures and improve system availability
Cybersecurity & Compliance (ICS Focus)
  • Participate in ICS cybersecurity practices, including control validation, security assessments, and alignment with site security standards
  • Support secure design and change practices in live environments where ICS changes can have immediate operational impact
Asset Management & Continuous Improvement
  • Improve the quality and structure of ICS asset data and maintenance programs within CMMS/EAM systems
  • Drive continuous improvement in reliability, documentation, and operational standards across the controls environment
What You\'ll Bring
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Engineering (Automation, Technology, Electrical, Computer, or related) with a minimum of two (2) years of ICS/controls experience, or Associate degree (AAS) in (Industrial Automation, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Instrumentation & Control, or closely related field) with a minimum of four (4) years of directly relevant ICS/controls experience
  • Hands-on experience with PLC programming and HMI development in industrial environments
  • Strong troubleshooting capability, including root cause analysis across control systems, instrumentation, and communications
  • Experience designing, configuring, or modifying industrial control systems in live environments (beyond maintenance or calibration activities)
  • Ability to safely implement changes in live operating environments with a strong safety mindset
  • Experience with industrial instrumentation, control devices, and system integration (utilities, manufacturing, or similar)
  • Working knowledge of industrial communications and controls standards (e.g., IEC 61131-3 languages, industrial protocols)
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., ISA CAP/CCST or OEM platforms such as Rockwell, Siemens, Emerson) are a plus
  • Clear communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with operations, technicians, and leadership
Additional Details
  • This role requires on-site attendance on a daily basis
  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver\'s license with a clean driving record and be able to operate company vehicles on and around campus and plant sites
  • Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
  • Ability to work in industrial environments, including climbing stairs and ladders and working in varying temperature conditions, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Work environments include both office and field settings, with exposure to variable weather conditions, elevated temperatures, and moderate noise
