Job summary

Jim Myers & Sons, Inc., a leading designer and manufacturer of water treatment equipment, seeks a Controls Engineer to lead control system designs on JMS projects. You will own PLC/HMI programming, electrical documentation, testing, commissioning, and field troubleshooting from kickoff to closeout.

Responsibilities include defining scope with Project Engineers, developing control narratives, creating I/O lists and schematics, selecting hardware, and coordinating with vendors and customers.

Qualifications

• 5+ years designing, commissioning, and troubleshooting industrial control systems.
• Proficient in PLC and HMI programming; experience with Rockwell Automation and Siemens platforms.
• Knowledge of control panels, electrical schematics, motor controls, VFDs, instrumentation, and industrial networks (PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP).
• Strong field troubleshooting skills; ability to work safely around energized systems.
• Ability to manage controls deliverables across multiple projects and communicate status and risks.

• Integrate JMS equipment with motors, conveyors, and customer systems.
• Coordinate interfaces with cross-functional teams and vendors; review submittals and RFIs.
• Conduct factory acceptance tests and site checkout; travel to sites as needed.
• Produce as-built drawings and O&M content; adhere to JMS safety policies.

Job Summary

The Controls Engineer is the controls technical lead for assigned JMS projects. Working closely with Project Engineers, this position converts project and mechanical process requirements into safe, reliable control systems. The role owns controls design, electrical documentation, PLC/HMI programming, testing, commissioning, and field troubleshooting from project kickoff through closeout.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Project Engineers to define the controls scope, deliverables, schedule, budget requirements, and technical risks for each project.
• Review proposals, contracts, plans, and specifications; define controls requirements, clarifications, and exclusions.
• Develop control narratives and sequences of operation for the intended process and equipment operation.
• Prepare and maintain I/O lists, instrument lists, network architecture, panel layouts, schematics, interconnection diagrams, cable schedules, and controls bills of material.
• Select and specify PLCs, HMIs, remote I/O, VFDs, motor starters, instrumentation, safety devices, control panels, and industrial network hardware.
• Program, configure, test, and document PLCs, HMIs, VFDs and industrial communications systems.
• Integrate JMS equipment with motors, conveyors, gates, safety circuits, customer systems, and third-party packages.
• Coordinate controls interfaces with Project Engineering, Design, Manufacturing, Sourcing, panel builders, electrical contractors, vendors, and customers; review vendor submittals and support RFIs and scope changes.
• Check designs and programs for accuracy, completeness, code compliance, maintainability, and project conformance; conduct factory acceptance testing.
• Provide site checkout, I/O verification, startup, commissioning, tuning, training, and troubleshooting; travel to customer and fabrication sites is required.
• Complete as-built drawings and O&M content, and follow all JMS safety requirements, policies, and procedures.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands‑on experience designing, commissioning, and troubleshooting industrial control systems.
• Proficiency with PLC and HMI programming; experience with Rockwell Automation and Siemens platforms is preferred.
• Working knowledge of control panels, electrical schematics, motor controls, VFDs, instrumentation, 24 VDC circuits, and industrial communications such as PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, and Modbus TCP.
• Strong field troubleshooting skills and the ability to work safely around industrial equipment and energized systems in accordance with company procedures.
• Ability to manage controls deliverables for multiple projects while communicating status, risks, and technical decisions to Project Engineers.
• Strong written, verbal and Microsoft Office skills with a collaborative approach to solving technical problems.

Desired Experience and Skills

• Experience with municipal water or wastewater treatment systems and material handling equipment, including conveyors and bulk storage systems.
• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical, or comparable electrical design software.
• Knowledge of UL 508A, NFPA 79, the National Electrical Code, and applicable industrial control panel practices.
• Experience with SCADA, remote connectivity, managed Ethernet networks, factory acceptance testing, and field commissioning of custom OEM equipment.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
