Job description

We are excited to announce an opening for a Controls Engineer - Hybrid Power Systems at our San Diego, CA location.

At Tour Engine, our mission is to launch a new generation of split-cycle engines that combine high efficiency (low CO₂) with ultra-low NOₓ emissions, enabling resilient distributed power generation solutions for a cleaner energy future.

This is a unique opportunity to work on cutting‑edge hybrid power technologies, contribute to breakthrough advancements in next‑generation energy systems and join a team passionate about engineering innovation and real‑world impact.

We are seeking a mid‑level Controls Engineer to join our team developing advanced engine and hybrid‑electric stationary power generation systems. This role combines engine controls development with electrical system design and integration across 12V and 48V subsystems. The successful candidate will work cross‑functionally to deliver a reliable, efficient and safe hybrid platform for next‑generation distributed power applications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and calibrate MATLAB/Simulink control models on embedded ECUs for engine and hybrid electric power generation systems to optimize performance, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Design, select and validate 12V and 48V electrical architectures, including wire harness, sensors, battery systems, inverters, DC/DC converters and CAN networks.
  • Support existing LabView data acquisition and control systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and testing teams.
  • Support prototype commissioning, validation and troubleshooting at partner and customer sites (approximately 20% travel).
Required Qualifications:
  • BS in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering (or related field).
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in relevant control system development.
  • Proficient in MATLAB/Simulink for model-based control design and code generation.
  • Experience with LabVIEW or other graphical programming and data acquisition tools.
  • Strong analytical, documentation and cross‑functional communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in engine development, calibration or testing programs.
  • Experience with version control (Git, SVN, or similar) for collaborative software development.
  • Background in hybrid or battery-integrated power generation systems is a plus.
