Job summary

Top Hat Engineering Corp is seeking a Controls Engineer I to help develop, program, and commission automation control systems from concept through implementation. This role involves creating virtual commissioning environments using Emulate3D and designing electrical schematics and panel drawings with AutoCAD Electrical.

You will read PLC logic, troubleshoot VFDs, and support on-site commissioning, with up to 50% travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
  • 2+ years of experience in control systems engineering or related field.
  • Experience with automation hardware and software.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and PLC logic.

Position Summary:

The Controls Engineer will help develop, program, and commission automation control systems from concept through implementation. This role involves creating virtual commissioning environments usingEmulate3D, developingPLC logic programs from scratch, and designingSCADA and HMI applicationswithinIgnitionandFactoryTalk Optix Studioplatforms. The Controls Engineer will also design, and document detailed electrical control systems, producingelectrical schematicsandpanel assembly drawingsusingAutoCAD Electrical.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Work with multiple cross functional engineers to bring a n idea from concept to reality.

  • Design and develop logic programs to support a wide variety of customers.

  • Work closely with cross functional teams to integrate conveyor or controls solutions, automated material handling equipment, and autonomous vehicles, amongst other hardware platforms.

  • Ability to provide technical expertise in controls software design, development, and deployment.

  • Perform on-site commissioning and testing support.

  • Break down the design into manageable development tasks and to and maintain project schedules.

  • Provide 24/7 remote support when required.

  • Mentor and train less experienced engineers.


Qualifications


  • Bachelors or Masters in: Controls Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering.

  • 2+ years of experience in control systems engineering with a bachelor's degree or a master's degree.


Essential Skills Required:


  • Ability to read and debug PLC programs.

  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics.

  • Experience commissioning and troubleshooting VFD's.

  • Familiarity with: Studio 5000/RSLogix, FactoryTalk View, and AutoCAD.

  • Ability to assist in project definition, specification, purchasing follow-through to installation.

  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills in software and hardware.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Job will require up to a maximum of 50% travel.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience commissioning and troubleshooting servo drives.

  • SQL Management experience.

  • Understanding of computer networking concepts and architecture.

  • Warehouse operations management experience or experience with warehouse management and/or execution systems.
