Job summary

HOJ Innovations in Salt Lake City, UT seeks a Controls Engineer to design, develop, and support industrial material handling and Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) solutions. You will work directly with hardware, programming software, electrical systems and equipment during development, commissioning, and support activities.

The role involves requirement analysis, device layout, control schematics, PLC/HMI programming, AMR integration, and on-site commissioning to optimize system designs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain PLC and HMI programs.
• Integrate and support AMRs within material handling and automation systems.
• Develop and troubleshoot system-level integrations between PLCs, AMRs, HMIs, WMS/MES, and external software.
• Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues including PLCs, motion control, SCADA, drives, and sensors.
• Perform on-site commissioning to implement and optimize system designs.

Job description

HOJ Innovations is seeking a passionate, detail-oriented Controls Engineer to assist in the design, development, and support of industrial material handling and Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) solutions. The ideal candidate is comfortable working directly with hardware, programming software, electrical systems and equipment during development, commissioning, and support activities.

The Controls Engineer understands equipment, business, and customer requirements that drive the design of robust technical solutions. You will participate in all phases of the product development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, specification development, device layout drawings, control schematics, PLC logic, AMR system integration, and installation support. Additionally, you will support installed systems with both scheduled and emergency service. You will collaborate closely with engineers, technicians, and field personnel to resolve complex site requirements, support system integration, and help HOJ Innovations deliver exceptional customer value.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, test, and maintain PLC and HMI programs
• Integrate and support Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) within material handling and automation systems, including communication, task execution, and system coordination
• Develop and troubleshoot system-level integrations between PLCs, AMRs, HMIs, WMS/MES systems, and external software platforms
• Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues including, but not limited to:
• PLCs
• Motion control and multi-axis servo systems
• SCADA systems
• AC/DC drives
• Industrial electronics
• PLC-to-PC interfaces
• Pneumatics
• Photoelectric, vision, and laser-based control devices
• Debug electrical installations and controls hardware of moderate complexity, working directly with panels, devices, and field wiring when required
• Perform on-site commissioning to implement, validate, and optimize system designs (including AMR deployments)
• Seek timely solutions to unexpected problems and make meaningful contributions with minimal direction
• Support the existing install base through scheduled maintenance reviews and emergency service to diagnose and resolve controls or system failures
• Prepare control schematics and specifications for control panel fabrication
• Support electrical installation by coordinating with electricians and system installers
• Document system designs, configurations, and troubleshooting procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Strong creative-thinking and problem-solving skills
• Strong software-oriented mindset with the ability and willingness to work hands-on with hardware as required
• Ability to balance multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail and working with minimal supervision
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Team-oriented and collaborative approach
• Experience with Beckhoff IPCs and TwinCAT programming a plus
• Experience with Ignition by Inductive Automation a plus
• Experience with industrial communication protocols (TCP/IP, REST APIs, fieldbus protocols, etc.)
• Exposure to or experience with AMRs, robotics, or mobile automation systems is strongly preferred
• Functional Mandarin speaking / reading skills a plus
• Willingness to learn and implement new technologies
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required
