An established custom machinery manufacturer is seeking a Controls Engineer to join its engineering team in northern Indiana.
This is a hands-on engineering position focused on PLC programming, HMI development, electrical design, and the integration of custom automated equipment. The organization designs and builds specialized machinery for industrial food processing and packaging applications, including automated material handling, palletizing, depalletizing, and robotic systems.
The engineer will be responsible for developing and modifying controls programs, designing electrical schematics, and adapting existing machine platforms to meet individual customer requirements. The position offers substantial technical ownership, exposure to unique engineering challenges, and the opportunity to work closely with an experienced team throughout the machinery development process.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs using Rockwell / Allen-Bradley platforms
- Create and configure PanelView HMI applications for custom automated machinery
- Adapt existing PLC programs and control architectures to accommodate customer-specific equipment requirements
- Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and controls documentation using AutoCAD
- Design and support electrical control systems for custom machinery and automated equipment
- Interpret customer specifications and translate requirements into functional controls solutions
- Develop electrical bills of materials and coordinate the selection and ordering of components
- Support the integration of PLCs, HMIs, electrical components, and industrial automation equipment
- Ensure controls designs meet customer-specific machinery safety requirements
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers and machine builders throughout equipment development
- Support troubleshooting, testing, and debugging of automated machinery
- Contribute to equipment development projects involving automated material handling and robotic integration
- Identify opportunities to improve existing control systems while maintaining established engineering standards
- Provide technical support throughout machine development and implementation
- Take ownership of assigned controls engineering responsibilities from initial requirements through completed equipment
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience developing PLC programs for industrial automation or custom machinery
- Strong working knowledge of Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLC systems
- Experience creating and modifying PLC logic rather than exclusively troubleshooting existing programs
- Experience with PanelView HMI development or similar industrial operator interfaces
- Proficiency using AutoCAD to develop or modify electrical schematics
- Understanding of electrical controls hardware, control panels, and industrial automation systems
- Experience interpreting electrical drawings and customer engineering specifications
- Familiarity with machinery safety requirements and industrial electrical standards
- Ability to develop electrical parts lists and select appropriate control system components
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Experience working with automated manufacturing equipment or custom machinery
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a small engineering team
- Comfortable working with established controls architectures and adapting them to new applications
- Interest in long-term technical development and continued growth within an engineering organization
An associate degree, bachelor's degree, or equivalent practical engineering experience will be considered. Demonstrated technical ability is more important than a specific degree or number of years of experience.
Experience with the following is beneficial:
- Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLCs
- PanelView HMI Development
- PLC Logic Development
- Electrical Schematic Design
- Custom Machinery / OEM Equipment
- FANUC / ABB Robotics
- Machine Safety Integration
- Electrical Bills of Materials
- Equipment Testing & Troubleshooting
- Food Processing & Packaging Automation
Why Consider This Opportunity?
- Work on custom-engineered machinery rather than repetitive production maintenance
- Take ownership of PLC programming, HMI development, and electrical controls design
- Contribute to unique automation projects involving specialized machinery and robotic systems
- Work closely with mechanical engineering and machine-building teams
- Gain exposure to the complete controls development process for custom industrial equipment
- Join an established business with a collaborative, hands-on engineering environment
- Opportunity to introduce improvements and new ideas while working with proven machine platforms
- Work on equipment designed around individual customer applications and engineering challenges
