Job description

Role Overview

The Controller position owns all accounting functions for our clients and will be responsible for issuing client financial statements, including thoughtful and value‑added fluctuation analyses, developing financial models, and managing departmental budgets and forecasts. The Controller also manages Attivo staff to own full‑cycle month‑end close, accounts receivable and payable, payroll, and tax compliance. Experience with developing financial models from the ground up and establishing policies and procedures within a corporation is highly preferred. The ideal candidate has worked at or with early‑stage start‑ups and has a passion for helping companies scale and grow.

The position is part‑time (20–29 hours per week), flexible/work from home. The location is flexible with a preference for candidates in San Francisco/Bay Area, Los Angeles/Southern California, New York City, Austin, and Boston. Candidates in other locations are welcome to apply. Some travel to in‑person company events is required, approximately 2–3 weeks per year. In‑person onboarding training will take place within the first 3 months of employment (locations vary).

Responsibilities

• Manage all general accounting functions, including performing month‑end close process, eliminations & consolidations, preparing and booking journal entries, account reconciliations and variance analysis
• Prepare monthly consolidated client financials including fluctuation analysis and budget vs actual comparisons
• Set client accounting & tax policies
• Define & implement ASC 606 revenue recognition policies
• Direct activities related to efficient customer cash collection, vendor payments, overall cash management and cash forecasting
• Build financial models to help clients manage cash and make intelligent and proactive operational decisions
• Analyze company operations to identify operational and cost efficiencies and implement solutions
• Create and manage KPI Dashboards
• Manage general HR responsibilities, including payroll, processing employee onboarding & offboarding, and benefits management
• Oversee client tax‑related matters to ensure timely compliance
• Lead annual financial audits, as required
• Manage and mentor accounting teams across all clients

Requirements

• Desire to work side by side with a variety of CFOs and want mentorship
• Advanced+ Excel skills
• Experience with standard software solutions: QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite, Campfire, Brex, Ramp, Rippling, Gusto, Rillet, Carta
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities
• Independent judgment and decision‑making
• Ability to manage multiple projects/priorities at a time

• Experience implementing workflow automation or AI‑enabled tools preferred. Familiarity with generative AI tools and automation platforms strongly preferred.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred. CPA preferred
• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least 2 years at the Assistant Controller level and above
• Experience guiding, mentoring, and leading high performing accounting teams
• Experience working in a fast‑paced technology and/or professional services environment

Salary Range

Attivo offers a competitive hourly rate and opportunities for advancement. The hiring range for part‑time Controller is approximately $75 to $90 per hour. This position is not benefits eligible.
