Job summary

Houston Grand Opera seeks a Controller to lead accounting operations in a nonprofit, mission-driven setting. You will oversee the general ledger, close processes, and financial reporting, coordinating audits, tax filings, and endowment accounting. Strong communication with non‑financial stakeholders is essential.

You will ensure internal controls, policy compliance, and accurate analysis for executives and funders, supporting the organization’s artistic mission and strategic priorities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• GAAP knowledge for nonprofit organizations including ASC 958 and revenue recognition.
• Proficiency with accounting software; advanced Excel; experience with financial reporting tools and data visualization.

Responsibilities

• Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, fixed assets, revenue, payroll accounting, and cash management.
• Manage month-end and year-end close processes with reconciliations and reporting packages.
• Coordinate Endowment accounting, quarterly close, and investment roll forward.
• Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure reliable reporting.
• Maintain financial policies and update documentation as needed.
• Oversee annual audit and preparation of audited financial statements.
• Coordinate Form 990s and charitable filings; ensure compliance with tax and grant reporting requirements.
