A small manufacturing firm in Oakland, CA is seeking a Controller to oversee all accounting and financial operations. Responsibilities

  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Coordinate with external CPAs on audits, reviews, and tax filings.
  • Provide financial analysis and KPI reporting to operational leadership.
  • Mentor accounting staff and drive process improvements.

Job description

The Controller will oversee all accounting and financial operations for a small manufacturing company, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and efficient processes. This role is hands‑on and requires experience in manufacturing accounting, including cost accounting and inventory management. The Controller will partner closely with the CFO and ownership to support decision‑making and drive financial discipline.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month‑end close
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Manage cost accounting, inventory valuation, standard costing, and variance analysis
  • Maintain and improve inventory controls, bill of materials (BOMs), and work‑in‑process (WIP) reporting
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
  • Ensure timely and accurate sales tax, property tax, and other regulatory filings
  • Coordinate with external CPA firms on audits, reviews, and tax filings
  • Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies
  • Support operational leadership with financial analysis, margin analysis, and KPI reporting
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and system enhancements
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff (if applicable)
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA or CMA preferred)
  • 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, within a private manufacturing setting
  • Strong knowledge of cost accounting, inventory, and manufacturing operations
  • Experience with ERP or manufacturing accounting systems
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and financial reportingHands‑on, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working in a lean environment
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to partner cross‑functionally
  • Small to mid‑sized manufacturing company background
  • Experience building or improving accounting processes
