Job summary

General Motors in Michigan is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for automotive platforms. You will develop, analyze and test software, act as SME for platform components, and verify controller function on bench and in vehicles.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 4 years of experience in Software Engineer, Programmer Analyst, Development Engineer, Release Engineer or related role.
  • Embedded systems in automotive applications including control systems, sensor integration, and real-time processing.
  • Automotive communication protocols including CAN, LIN, FlexRay, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with ETAS INCA and Vector CANape for parameter tuning and validation.
  • Experience with Git, Gerrit, Jenkins, and IDEs like Eclipse.
  • Software flashing techniques, OTA updates, and flashing procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Generate technical solutions including specifying of requirements, functional decomposition, analysis, development and testing for programs.
  • Serve as SME for at least one platform or application component and participate in interviews.
  • Verify controller functionality on bench and vehicle.
  • Define test cases with cross-functional teams for regression testing and analytics.
  • Automate system level test cases for automated regression testing.
  • Troubleshoot vehicle-level integration issues including hardware, software, calibration and wiring.
  • Document hardware and software anomalies and confirm resolutions.
  • Support algorithm requirement development and document algorithm verification requirements.
  • Develop, document, and review I/O functional requirements and test cases.
  • Participate in work product reviews for algorithm, software, and specifications.
  • Provide software support for calibration teams, development trips, assembly plant field support, and durability/test fleets.

Job description

DUTIES
  • Generate technical solutions including specifying of requirements, functional decomposition, analysis, development and testing for current, new and major programs.
  • Perform as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for at least one platform or application component and participates in interviews.
  • Verify controller functionality on a bench and vehicle.
  • Work with Technical Review Boards and other cross functional teams to define test cases and to determine how frequently they should be executed.
  • Automate system level test cases to allow for automated regression testing.
  • Troubleshoot vehicle level integration issues including hardware, software, calibration and vehicle wiring.
  • Document hardware and software anomalies using Rational Team Concert (RTC) or similar database.
  • Confirm resolution of documented hardware and software anomalies.
  • Support algorithm requirement development by supporting algorithm technical review boards.
  • Document algorithm functional and verification requirements.
  • Develop, document, and review I/O functional requirements and test cases.
  • Conduct and participate in work product reviews for algorithm, software, and specifications incorporating I/O functional requirements and test cases.
  • Provide support as required: Software support for calibration teams and development trips, assembly plant and field problem resolution, prototype shop support, and durability cars and captured test fleet support.

Hybrid Work Policy - 3 days In-office, 2 days remote - Must be able to report to local office.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's degree in Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field of study and Four (4) years of experience as a Software Engineer, Programmer Analyst, Development Engineer, Release Engineer or related role.
  • Three (3) years of experience with:
    • Embedded systems, including their architecture and components in automotive applications including control systems, sensor integration, and real-time processing;
    • Using diagnostic tools like Vector CANoe, CANalyzer, and VehicleSpy for signal monitoring, and fault isolation;
    • Interpreting software logs and error codes to identify root causes in code and system behavior;
    • Automotive communication protocols including CAN, LIN, FlexRay, and Ethernet to trace data flows and understand network behaviors;
    • Interpreting test data, identify patterns in failures, and apply structured problem-solving approaches;
    • Root cause analysis including 5 Whys and Fishbone Diagram, and failure mode analysis;
    • Vehicle electrical systems and mechanical components for diagnosing mechatronic issues where hardware and software intersect;
    • Systems engineering principles to see how individual components, including hardware, software, and calibrations, interact within the larger vehicle system;
    • Analyzing requirements to ensure each component and system function meets design intent and customer expectations;
    • Calibration management, with ETAS INCA and Vector CANape, to modify and validate parameter settings in real time;
    • Diagnosing hardware-related issues, from PCB-level component failure to wiring harness issues, grounding problems, and sensor malfunctions;
    • Using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other electrical diagnostic tools to validate hardware functionality;
    • and ECU reprogramming tools and protocols including UDS to handle in-field updates and support assembly plant staff in flashing procedures.
  • One (1) year of experience with:
    • Lauterbach and GreenHills Multi for data capture, hardware and software debugging;
    • Software development tools including Git, Gerrit, Jenkins, and IDEs including Eclipse;
    • and Software flashing techniques, including Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, to support vehicle software updates and troubleshoot any issues that arise during flashing.
