Job summary

Certus Recruitment partners with a long-established professional liability insurer in Austin, Texas, seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting operations, statutory financial reporting and regulatory compliance.

Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, you’ll supervise a small accounting team, remain hands-on with SAP calculations, annual statements and tax filings, and provide clear financial analysis to executive leadership.

Qualifications

• Active CPA certification is essential.
• Minimum 5 years of statutory insurance accounting experience.
• Experience preparing Yellow Book statements is essential.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
• Experience leading a small accounting team.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and reporting deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Maintain financial records under Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP).
• Prepare quarterly and annual statutory financial statements.
• Manage financial reporting, regulatory filings and compliance.
• Oversee accounting operations and general ledger.
• Supervise AP, AR and HR-related accounting activities.
• Prepare and file state premium tax returns.
• Coordinate federal income tax filings with external advisors.
• Manage the annual audit process.
• Monitor and manage company cash flow.
• Provide financial analysis and reporting to executive leadership.

Certus Recruitment is partnering with a long-established and financially strong professional liability insurance provider looking to appoint an experienced Controller.

This is a hands‑on leadership role with responsibility for the organization's accounting operations, statutory financial reporting and regulatory compliance.

Reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance, you'll lead a small accounting team while remaining closely involved in the detail.

What you'll be doing:

• Maintaining financial records in accordance with Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP)
• Preparing quarterly and annual statutory financial statements
• Managing financial reporting, regulatory filings and compliance
• Overseeing accounting operations and general ledger functions
• Supervising staff responsible for AP, AR and HR-related accounting activities
• Preparing and filing state premium tax returns
• Coordinating federal income tax filings with external advisors
• Managing the annual audit process
• Monitoring and managing company cash flow
• Providing financial analysis and reporting to executive leadership

What we're looking for:

• Active CPA – essential
