Job summary

MassTech is seeking a Controller, a senior finance leader responsible for the agency’s accounting operations and supporting the CFO in stewarding public funds. You will oversee the monthly and year‑end close, the preparation of financial statements, budget development, and program‑based reporting with hands‑on leadership across accounting, controls, and audit readiness.

  • Five to seven years of progressively responsible finance, accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting experience.
  • Experience preparing financial statements, managing automated financial systems, and developing spreadsheet-based budget or forecasting models.
  • Experience supervising staff, managing projects, and supporting cross-functional financial initiatives.
  • Experience developing, documenting, and implementing financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and operational processes.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and coordinate the agency’s fiscal affairs in partnership with the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Oversee general accounting, management accounting, project-based accounting, grant accounting, federal funding compliance, and related financial reporting.
  • Supervise finance staff responsible for journal entries, cash requirements, account analyses, financial statements, and other recurring fiscal deliverables.
  • Manage the monthly and year-end close processes and ensure timely preparation of accurate financial statements and supporting analyses.
  • Lead the annual financial audit, single audit, and applicable state audit processes, including preparation of schedules, documentation, and management responses.
  • Coordinate annual budget development, periodic forecasting, variance analysis, and standardized reporting for senior management and program staff.
  • Monitor financial results against operating objectives, program budgets, and federal funding requirements; identify key variances and recommend corrective actions.
  • In concert with the CFO maintain and improve accounting systems, reporting software, budget planning tools, and related financial processes in coordination with IT, vendors, and program teams.
  • Prepare financial reports, analyses, presentations, and supporting materials for executive leadership, division management, the Finance and Audit Committee, and the Board of Directors.
  • Support federal funding applications, budget assumptions, financial reports, drawdowns, and compliance monitoring for applicable federal programs.
  • Partner with program and operational teams to ensure financial considerations, controls, and reporting requirements are incorporated into program design and implementation.
  • Lead special projects, ad hoc analyses, information requests, and other fiscal initiatives as assigned by the Executive Director, Chief Financial Officer, or their designees.

Job description

The Controller is a senior finance leader responsible for managing the agency’s accounting operations and supporting the Chief Financial Officer in the stewardship of public funds. This role oversees the monthly and year‑end close processes, preparation of timely and accurate financial statements, budget development, financial analysis, and program‑based reporting. The Controller provides hands‑on leadership across accounting operations, fiscal controls, internal and external reporting, and audit readiness while serving as a trusted advisor to the CFO and agency leadership.

The position is responsible for maintaining accounting and business systems, strengthening reporting tools used for financial statements, payment processing, and budget planning, and ensuring the integrity of financial data. The Controller ensures compliance with internal policies and procedures, applicable Massachusetts and federal requirements, grant and program reporting obligations, generally accepted accounting principles, and governmental accounting standards applicable to public instrumentalities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards and Massachusetts requirements applicable to public instrumentalities preferred.
  • Experience with federal grant applications, financial reporting, drawdowns, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, problem‑solving, and financial modeling skills.
  • Ability to identify business issues, document requirements, recommend solutions, and implement financial best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, evaluate, and develop finance staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate financial information to non‑financial audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise sound judgment in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and experience with accounting, payroll, database, and reporting systems.
  • Ability to attend meetings or events at MassTech offices or other locations across Massachusetts, some of which may not be readily accessible by public transportation.

This position requires candidates to be able to work at our Westborough, Massachusetts office at least two days per week. This is not a fully remote position.

The salary range for this position is $125,000 - 135,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Final compensation will be determined based on the candidate’s background, skills, and internal equity.

Attend offsite and inter‑office meetings as required, including travel between Boston and Westborough office locations. Some work locations and meeting sites may not be accessible by public transportation.
