Job summary

Tutor Intelligence in Watertown, MA seeks its first Controller to lead all accounting and month-end close, owning the general ledger, payroll, and controls. You will report to the Head of Finance and work closely with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Engineering to support finance operations.

This player-coach role requires 6–10 years of accounting experience, strong US GAAP knowledge, and experience in hardware/manufacturing. Build an AI-native accounting function with an elite team.

Qualifications

• 6–10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, mix of public and industry preferred.
• Strong technical accounting foundation and knowledge of U.S. GAAP.
• Experience in hardware, manufacturing, or another inventory-carrying business.
• You have owned a monthly close end to end and participated in external audits.

Responsibilities

• Lead all accounting and month-end close activities.
• Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll.
• Develop and maintain internal controls, financial policies, and compliance procedures.
• Manage the audit process and coordinate internal and external audit activity.
• Handle lender reporting, covenant tracking, and borrowing-base packages.

Job description

We're hiring our first Controller.

Tutor builds robot workers and we build them ourselves — off our own line in Watertown, into factories and warehouses across the country, maintained by our own field team. That gives us a manufacturer's balance sheet inside a fast-moving, venture-backed company: inventory, BOMs, landed cost, work orders, warranty, fixed assets. You would own it outright.

You would report to the Head of Finance and be the senior accounting leader. You will work often with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Engineering, and sit close to the financing and lender work as it happens.

This is a player-coach role. We're looking for a builder who still makes things, not an operator who needs a large org to function. And we're an AI company: we expect you to build an AI-native accounting organization where an elite team produces at unusual scale.

What You'll Own

• Lead all accounting and month-end close activities
• Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll
• Develop and maintain internal controls, financial policies, and compliance procedures
• Manage the audit process. Support and coordinate all internal and external audit activity
• Lender reporting — covenant tracking and borrowing-base packages

Requirements

• 6-10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with a combination of public accounting and industry experience strongly preferred
• Strong technical accounting foundation and demonstrated knowledge of U.S. GAAP
• Experience in hardware, manufacturing, or another inventory-carrying business
• You have personally owned a monthly close end to end
• You have been on the company-side through an external audit
• Fixed assets, depreciation, and lease accounting (ASC 842)
• ERP and MES fluency

Nice to Haves (Zero or More)

• CPA
• Startup experience, particularly a company between roughly 100 and 300 people
• You took a venture-backed company through its first audit
• Duty, tariff, and country-of-origin exposure on imported components
• Debt covenant and borrowing-base reporting
• Experience with Rillet, Ramp, or Rippling

$160,000 - $200,000 a year
