The Controller serves as the company's senior day-to-day accounting and financial-management resource, providing the President and other members of management with accurate financial information, objective analysis, and practical financial guidance.

The Controller is expected to maintain a detailed understanding of the company's financial and accounting activities while developing systems, processes, and staff capabilities that support accurate reporting, appropriate controls, operational efficiency, and continuity. The position works collaboratively with other departments to improve financial visibility, strengthen business processes, and support the company's continued growth.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Reasonable accommodation will be provided to enable employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions of their job, absent undue hardship.

  • Leads the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes and ensures timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and management reports.
  • Oversees the general ledger and supporting accounting functions, including account reconciliations, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, accruals, prepaid expenses, and other balance-sheet and income-statement accounts.
  • Maintains the integrity of accounting records and ensures transactions are recorded accurately, consistently, and in accordance with applicable accounting principles and company policies.
  • Oversees manufacturing and cost-accounting activities, including inventory valuation, product and project costing, labor and overhead allocation, cost analysis, margins and related accounting controls.
  • Reviews inventory accounting and related processes, including physical inventory activities, inventory reconciliations and identification of excess, obsolete or otherwise impaired inventory.
  • Coordinates preparation of the annual operating budget and periodic financial forecasts and provides management with timely analysis of actual results compared with budget, forecast and prior periods.
  • Develops and maintains cash-flow and working-capital reporting and provides management with visibility into cash requirements, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory and other significant drivers of working capital.
  • Provides the President and other members of management with timely financial analysis regarding revenue, expenses, margins, operating performance, trends and other matters affecting company profitability and financial position.
  • Establishes, maintains and periodically evaluates internal accounting controls, approval processes, reconciliations and segregation of duties appropriate to the size and complexity of the organization.
  • Identifies accounting, financial and process risks and recommends practical corrective actions or improvements.
  • Coordinates preparation of schedules, supporting documentation and other materials required for external financial reviews, audits, tax preparation and regulatory reporting.
  • Serves as the primary internal accounting contact for outside auditors, tax professionals and other financial advisers and coordinates timely resolution of questions and requested information.

  • Maintains financial oversight of the payroll process, including appropriate review, reconciliation, and accounting controls, and coordinates with Human Resources and the Payroll Administrator regarding payroll-related financial matters.
  • Maintains oversight of banking and treasury activities assigned to the Controller, including cash-account reconciliations, authorized transactions, and financial controls. Supports the President in relationships with banks and other financial institutions as requested.
  • Oversees accounting for capital assets, including capitalization, depreciation, and appropriate supporting records.
  • Evaluates existing accounting and financial systems, reports, and workflows and recommends improvements to increase accuracy, efficiency, control, and usefulness of financial information.
  • Participates in implementation or modification of accounting, ERP, timekeeping, payroll, inventory and related business systems to ensure appropriate financial controls and data integrity.
  • Develops and maintains documented accounting policies, procedures, closing schedules, and recurring-process documentation sufficient to provide consistent execution and backup coverage.
  • Establishes meaningful Finance and Accounting performance measures and monitors the timeliness, accuracy, and effectiveness of recurring accounting processes.
  • Works collaboratively with operations, engineering, sales, Human Resources, and other departments to understand the financial implications of business activities and improve the accuracy and usefulness of financial information.
