Job summary

Careers In Nonprofits is seeking a hands-on Controller for a nonprofit school in San Mateo, CA. The on-site, full-time role will report to the Director of Finance and HR and oversee day-to-day transactions as well as month-end and year-end close.

The ideal candidate has a BA in Accounting or Finance, at least five years in nonprofit accounting, and experience with budgeting, monthly financial reporting, and payroll. You will manage AP/AR, GL, and financial operations for the school.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or similar.
• Minimum of 5 years of nonprofit accounting experience required.
• Experience with budgeting, monthly financial reporting and year-end close.
• Familiarity with payroll, AP/AR and GL management.
• Proficient with Excel and accounting software.
• Prior experience in an educational institution preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

• Track all receipts, disbursements and proper coding of accounts.
• Manage student accounts and respond promptly and professionally to parent inquiries.
• Bill families for tuition, extended care and auxiliary programs.
• Process all AP/AR and payroll.
• Reconcile investment, receivables, enrollment and contribution accounts.
• Review bank reconciliations prepared by outside CPA.
• Manage monthly financial close.
• Prepare and record journal entries, review general ledger activity and reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly.
• Prepare and distribute monthly budget, financial and variance reports to department leaders.
• Alert your supervisor to financial discrepancies, risks and emerging issues.
• Assist with annual audit preparation.
• Manage credit card donations for annual giving, auction and related reconciliations.
• Manage online expense management systems to ensure proper coding and approval of purchases.
• Assist as additional hands during drop off/pick up lines and as lunch monitor, or other similar duties as requested.

We are currently in search of a Controller for a Nonprofit School. The position is on-site in San Mateo, CA. This is a full-time, permanent position.

ANNUAL SALARY: $145,000 - $160,000

Is This Your Dream Job? The Controller will be joining a community-centered environment, with a small administrative team that is integrated into the greater functioning of the school. This role reports to the Director of Finance and HR and is responsible for managing the school’s financial operations. This is a great opportunity for a financial leader who is passionate about early education and enjoys being hands-on. We are looking for someone willing to dive into day-to-day AP/AR and payroll while also bringing the experience to oversee financial operations, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
