Job summary

HR Works is seeking a hands-on, strategic Controller to own the full accounting and financial reporting function in Puerto Rico. You will report to the CEO, lead a professionals team, and ensure accurate, timely financial statements while strengthening internal controls and providing insightful analysis to drive business decisions.

The role requires 8+ years of accounting experience (5+ in supervision), strong U.S.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• 5+ years in supervisory or accounting management role.
• Public accounting (audit) experience and/or Controller experience preferred.
• Strong command of U.S. GAAP and tax requirements.
• Fully bilingual English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

• Own the month-, quarter- and year-end close with accurate financial statements under U.S. GAAP.
• Lead all accounting operations: GL, AP, AR, payroll, fixed assets, and consolidation.
• Prepare the monthly management reporting package and KPI analysis for the CEO.
• Manage external audits and coordinate with auditors as primary contact.
• Oversee budgeting/forecasting, cash flow, and internal controls program.

About the Role

We are looking for a hands-on, strategic Controller to own the full accounting and financial reporting function and serve as a trusted financial partner to our CEO. Reporting directly to the CEO and leading a team of accounting professionals, you will ensure the accuracy and integrity of our financial statements, build strong internal controls and turn financial data into insights that drive business decisions. This is a high-visibility role with a real seat at the table and the opportunity to shape how finance operates across the organization.

What You'll Do

• Own the month-, quarter- and year-end close, delivering accurate, complete and timely financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
• Lead all accounting operations: general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, fixed assets, payroll accounting and consolidation.
• Prepare and present the monthly management reporting package to the CEO, including results analysis, variance explanations and key performance indicators (KPIs).
• Prepare financial information for the Board of Directors, shareholders, lenders and other stakeholders.
• Design, implement and monitor a strong internal control environment, including segregation of duties and approval authorities.
• Develop and maintain the company's accounting policies and procedures manual.
• Manage the annual external audit and serve as the primary point of contact for auditors.
• Lead the annual budget and financial forecasting process with the CEO and department heads; track actuals vs. budget and recommend corrective actions.
• Manage cash and liquidity, including cash flow forecasting, bank accounts and banking relationships.
• Ensure compliance with Puerto Rico and federal tax and regulatory requirements (Hacienda, IVU, CRIM, municipal licenses, IRS and applicable incentive reporting), working with external advisors.
• Provide cost-benefit analysis on initiatives, investments and processes to support strategic decisions.
• Lead, coach and develop the Senior Accountant and the AP and AR team, setting clear goals, priorities and development plans.
• Drive process improvement and automation across accounting systems and workflows (ERP).

What You Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. Active Puerto Rico CPA license strongly preferred; MBA is a plus.
• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or accounting management role.
• Public accounting (audit) experience and/or prior Controller or Assistant Controller experience preferred.
• Strong command of U.S. GAAP, financial close, consolidation, internal controls and Puerto Rico and federal tax requirements.
• Advanced proficiency in ERP/accounting systems and Excel.
• Fully bilingual (English and Spanish), with executive-level written and verbal communication skills.
• High integrity and discretion, a sharp analytical mindset and a proven ability to lead and develop teams.
