This is the first accounting hire at a fast-growing company, so the job is to turn outsourced bookkeeping into an audit-ready function. That means owning the monthly close, revenue recognition for self-serve, enterprise and usage-based deals, technical accounting positions, tax, and the first external audit. A strong candidate is a CPA with Big Four audit roots and 7 or more years in high-growth tech, who has built or run a close, written technical memos, and led an ERP rollout.
AI changes the routine side of accounting, such as reconciliations, matching, accrual drafts and first-pass flux notes, so a Controller here is expected to pick tools and redesign workflows rather than just run them. Judgment stays human: setting accounting policy, defending positions to auditors, and deciding how to treat unusual deals. Accountability for the numbers also stays with a person.
The role involves leading the rollout of an AI-native ERP and connecting it to billing, banking, payroll and cap table systems, which is hands-on experience with AI in finance. The company sells AI code review and pays for compute and inference, so the work includes accounting for usage-based revenue and AI cost structures and gross margin. Someone preparing can practice by using AI tools on their current close and documenting what worked and what did not.

An AI code reviewer that indexes a team's whole codebase as a graph first, so it can catch bugs a diff-only tool would miss.
