Capital Engineering Consultants in Sacramento seeks a hands-on Controller to lead accounting operations, project financial management, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls. The role partners with firm leadership to improve processes and deliver reliable financial information to executives.
Responsibilities include monthly close, GAAP reporting, audit coordination, and overseeing AP/AR/payroll. Focus on WIP, revenue recognition, and project profitability with enterprise-grade dashboards

The controller serves as the firm’s senior accounting leader and is responsible for accounting operations, project financial management, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, internal controls, and financial process improvement.
This is a hands-on accounting leadership position that combines traditional accounting management with project-based accounting and financial partnership to firm leadership. It requires a focus on continuous system improvement and facilitating better decision making by technical leaders. It is not a CFO, investment or capital-markets position.
The Controller will lead the day-to-day accounting function, supervise and develop current Accounting Staff, strengthen project accounting and internal controls, improve Deltek Vantagepoint reporting, and provide useful financial information to Capital’s President, Board of Directors, Principals and technical Project Managers.
·Own monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
·Maintain general-ledger activity integrity and balance-sheet reconciliations
·Prepare concise financial statements
·Coordinate external audit and tax support
·Oversee AP, AR, payroll accounting, and billing
·Monitor WIP and revenue recognition
·Analyze project profitability
·Support billing and collections processes
·Actively resolve billing, collections, contract, WIP, and project budget issues
·Improve financial visibility at project and PM levels
·Prepare financial dashboards and plain-English commentary
·Report on revenue, profit, cash, budget, AR, WIP, backlog, utilization, effective multiplier, write-offs,
and project profitability
·Provide President and Board with reliable information, mitigating “surprises”
·Prepare executive and Board reporting packages
·Work with firm leaders to identify project financial problem causes and corrective actions
·Lead annual budgeting and forecasting activities
·Assess & strengthen accounting controls
·Document procedures and workflows
·Manage financial records and reporting integrity
·Direct & Manage Deltek Vantagepoint accounting & financial management functions
·Improve accounting-related workflows
·Enhance reporting capabilities, data quality, and employee adoption
·Ensure technology and AI use is appropriate, streamlines workflows and preserves process integrity
and compliance
·Supervise, mentor, and support accounting staff
·Establish clear expectations and accountability
·Promote cross training and documentation
·Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or closely related field
·Six+ years of progressive accounting experience.
·Three years of Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager experience
·Experience owning monthly close, general ledger, balance-sheet reconciliations, and financial reporting
·Project-based accounting, job costing, WIP, billing, AR, and project profitability experience
·Financial reporting experience (budgets, forecasts, cash projections, management reporting
·Experience improving internal controls and accounting processes
·Advanced Excel Skills
·Ability to explain financial information to non-financial leaders
·Work primarily onsite (Sacramento headquarters)
·Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Environmental Consulting (project-based, professional-services
experience
·Professional Services Firm experience (fixed-fee and hourly services contracts; support Principals and
technical project managers)
·CPA or CMA designation
·Prior work with a privately held, multi-office, company of 50-150 employees
·$115,000-$105,000, plus eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus
