We are looking for a Controller to oversee accounting operations and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records. This individual will manage day-to-day accounting functions, financial reporting, payroll, tax compliance, and month-end/year-end close activities while supporting clients with timely financial information. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys problem-solving, process improvement, and working collaboratively in a client-focused environment.
Responsibilities of the Controller:
- Oversee accounting and bookkeeping functions, including bank reconciliations
- Reconcile and maintain balance sheet accounts, including fixed assets, loans, debt, and equity
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, including invoice processing and vendor payments
- Oversee payroll processing, payroll tax reconciliations, W-2 reporting, and related liabilities
- Prepare and file sales tax returns
- Manage month-end and year-end closing procedures
- Prepare and review financial statements for accuracy and completeness
- Analyze financial reports and investigate variances
- Prepare and review business and individual tax returns
- Communicate financial information and recommendations to clients
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and operational efficiencies
Skills
- Strong knowledge of corporate accounting principles and public accounting practices
- Proficiency with accounting software, including QuickBooks Online (QBO) and QuickBooks Desktop (QBD)
- Experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, and account reconciliations
- Knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and sales tax processes
- Familiarity with payroll systems such as ADP or Paychex
- Strong understanding of financial reporting and financial statement preparation
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Required)
- CPA certification required
- Previous experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or controller-level responsibilities
- Experience with financial reporting, payroll, tax preparation, and client accounting services
- Public accounting experience (Preferred)
This position is in-person and works closely with internal staff and clients in a collaborative office environment. The role may require additional hours during month-end, year-end, and tax deadlines to meet business and client needs.
