Job summary

East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) seeks a Controller to oversee the organization’s financial operations in Pittsburgh. The role emphasizes GAAP compliance, grant management, and maintaining strong internal controls to sustain EECM’s mission of serving individuals and families in the East End.

You will manage the general ledger, monthly and annual statements, budgeting, audits, and reporting to government agencies and private funders, collaborating with the CFO and program managers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, GAAP, and grant management.
  • Experience coordinating annual audits.
  • Strong proficiency with accounting software (MIP, QuickBooks) and Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor departmental budgets and prepare variance analyses.
  • Track grant expenditures and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
  • Prepare financial reports for government agencies and private funders.
  • Maintain compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and IRS/state reporting.
  • Assist CFO in coordinating annual independent financial audit.
  • Develop and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounting procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with program managers to monitor budgets.

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM), ensuring accurate financial reporting, sound internal controls, compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and adherence to federal, state, and grant regulations. The Controller provides strategic financial guidance to leadership while managing day-to-day accounting functions that support EECM's mission of serving individuals and families throughout Pittsburgh's East End.

Position Requirements
Financial Management
  • Manage the organization's general ledger and accounting operations.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and maintain cash flow reports.

Budgeting and Financial Planning
  • Assist the CFO in developing the annual operating budget.
  • Monitor departmental budgets and prepare variance analyses.
Grants and Compliance
  • Track grant expenditures and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
  • Prepare financial reports for government agencies and private funders.
  • Maintain compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and federal regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with IRS, state, and local reporting requirements.
Audit and Internal Controls
  • Assist CFO in coordinating the annual independent financial audit.
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Develop and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounting procedures.
Leadership and Collaboration
  • Work collaboratively with program managers to monitor budgets and funding.
  • Support organizational decision-making through financial analysis.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, GAAP, and grant management.
  • Experience preparing for and coordinating annual audits.
  • Strong proficiency with accounting software (e.g., MIP, QuickBooks or comparable nonprofit accounting systems) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Working Conditions and Physical Demand:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in a standard office environment and must be able to:

  • Demonstrate manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office equipment such as telephone, copier, scanner, computer, etc.
  • Perform light work - exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Able and interested in daily travel to the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh, PA. Street and lot parking is available at no cost.
  • Possess current and valid PA driver's license with 3-year clean driving record and maintain that driving record throughout employment
  • Possess a reliable vehicle that is available at all times throughout workday.
  • Maintain current and valid vehicle insurance and supply those financial responsibility cards to human resources as insurance comes due
  • Must meet Act 33 and 34 and FBI clearance requirement
Work Schedule/Compensation:
  • Full-time, 40hours per week.
  • Flexible schedule during normal business hours.
  • Annual Salary: $68,744
  • Paid holidays and prorated paid time off in accordance with EECM policies.
