Job description

Our mission

Every pet should get the care they need, regardless of cost. Vet med prices are up 40% since 2020, and pet owners are stuck having to pick between their bank account and furry friend. At Snout, we aim to solve this by enabling clinics to offer wellness plans that actually work.

The opportunity

Snout is one of the fastest growing wellness plan providers in the veterinary space, trusted by clinics across the U.S. We’re a small but mighty startup team of <50 employees. We're looking for our first Controller, the foundational accounting seat at the company. You'll join early enough that everything you build becomes the way it's done, taking us from a fractional accounting provider to an in-house finance function you help design from the ground up. This is a hybrid role based in the New York metro area.

The role

As Snout’s Controller, you'll own the general ledger, the monthly close, and the integrity of our books as we transition from a fractional accounting provider to an in-house finance function you help design from scratch. You'll inherit a working but outsourced ledger, and within two quarters you'll own a close process, a documented revenue recognition policy, and a successful audit kickoff. This isn't a maintenance role: our financial statements are covenant deliverables under a committed debt facility, and Snout operates as Servicer at member-transaction scale, so precision matters from day one. This role reports directly to the CFO.

You will be an early hire in a rapidly scaling finance organization spanning accounting, capital markets, data and analytics, and FP&A — the foundational finance role at a category-defining company, with the growth in front of it rather than behind it.

In your first year, you'll take Snout through its first GAAP audit, serving as the named accounting counterpart to our auditors and our institutional credit facility lender. You'll build and document a revenue recognition policy for a genuinely novel membership-plan model, own the reporting our lender depends on for covenant compliance, coordinate tax cleanup with outside advisors, and design the cash and payment controls that keep member and clinic money moving safely. It's a role that starts as a hands-on, AI-empowered seat of one, with real room to grow into leading a team as the business scales, and everything you build now becomes the foundation the finance function stands on.

If you've built the “close” before it existed and "first audit" sounds exciting rather than daunting, we'd love to hear from you!

Snout is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We know that great candidates may not check every box — and that’s okay. If you're excited about this role and our mission, we encourage you to apply if you meet at least 75% of qualifications including the first bullet. If you need any accommodations during the application or interview process, please let us know — we’re happy to support you.

What you’ll do
  • Close and ledger: full ownership of the general ledger, chart of accounts, and monthly close, including the transition from our fractional provider to in-house processes on a timeline you help set
  • Technical accounting: development and documentation of a GAAP revenue recognition policy for our membership-plan model, covering plan fees, contract assets from clinic payouts, breakage on unused plan value, cancellation fees, and the line between bad debt and churn
  • First audit: management of Snout's first financial statement audit, from firm engagement through fieldwork to opinion, including PBC list ownership, audit-readiness remediation, and serving as the primary contact for the audit team
  • Lender reporting: preparation of monthly unaudited and annual audited financial statements required under our credit facility, supporting covenant compliance and borrowing-base reporting
  • Tax coordination: cleanup of historical tax positions and ongoing compliance managed through external advisors, coordinated in-house
  • Controls and cash operations: designing controls for a business that touches member payments, clinic payouts, and a lender collections-account waterfall, including cash application and reconciliation, in partnership with engineering
  • Team structure: an AI-empowered individual contributor role to start, leveraging fractional and outsourced resources, with the opportunity to build and lead an internal team as volume and complexity grow
What we're looking for
  • CPA required, with a public accounting foundation (Big 4 or national firm, audit practice) followed by operating-company experience owning a close, not just participating in or auditing one
  • Experience taking a company through a first or early-stage audit, ideally at a lending, fintech, or subscription business
  • Demonstrated fluency using AI as core infrastructure for your own work, drafting policy memos, building reconciliations, and automating close checklists
  • Hands‑on technical accounting depth in revenue recognition (ASC 606) and ideally receivables or financial instruments (ASC 310/326)
  • Experience operating under lender reporting obligations: covenant packages, compliance certificates, and monthly deliverables with contractual deadlines
  • Comfort building accounting systems rather than inheriting them, working from imperfect data, and sequencing pragmatically
  • A builder's temperament: high standards, low ego, and the judgment to know which problems need to be solved perfectly and which just need to be solved
What will make you stand out
  • Startup experience at a Series A‑C company where the finance function didn't exist before you
  • A track record of early and repeated promotion, or controller‑level scope before holding the title
  • Experience as the final escalation point on accounting questions, with no one above you to hand the hard call to
  • Policies, close processes, or systems you've built that outlived your tenure and are still in use
Why you should join Snout
  • Fast growing, venture capital backed technology company focused on improving access to veterinary care
  • Ability to have a meaningful impact from Day 1, where your voice and opinion matters
  • Unlimited potential to grow in your career, learn and expand your skillsets
  • Collaborative, flexible, and friendly culture
Why this role might not be a fit for you
  • You don’t live in the New York Metro area and don't want to go into an office, or have the flexibility to travel quarterly
  • You want an established close process and finance team already in place, rather than the chance to build them
  • You'd rather participate in an audit than own one
  • You're looking for a role where AI is optional rather than core to how you work
  • The pace and uncertainty of startup life feels destabilizing rather than energizing
  • You don't have a connection to animals or an affinity for our mission
Compensation
  • $160 000 - $180 000 base salary
Benefits
  • Day 1 medical/dental/vision benefits
  • Flexible time off + 11 Snout calendar holidays
  • Paid parental leave
