Overview

Controller position at Hupy and Abraham, S.C. We are seeking a highly organized and experienced Controller to manage and streamline our financial operations within a dynamic personal injury law firm. The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in accounting and financial management, with a strong understanding of legal industry practices. This role is responsible for ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, maintaining compliance, and improving financial systems to support the unique demands of our legal practice.


Responsibilities


  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department

  • Monitor and manage firm cash flow, ensuring adequate liquidity for operational needs.

  • Maintain and manage the various general ledger account functions

  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes.

  • Prepare month-end, quarter-end and year-end financial statements

  • Establish short-term and long-term goals for the department

  • Develop, document, and maintain department processes and procedures

  • Regularly monitor and analyze financial data and make recommendations as needed. Provide explanation for large variances and discrepancies to Vice President.

  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliation for various bank accounts

  • Identify and resolve any outstanding deposits in transit or checks that have not cleared in the normal course of business

  • Establish and monitor internal controls to prevent financial misstatements of fraud.

  • Coordinate tax compliance and annual financial review with outside CPA firm.

  • Evaluate and implement financial systems or upgrades (e.g., practice management software integration with accounting systems).

  • Ensure full compliance with state bar rules regarding client trust accounts, including segregation of funds and timely disbursements.

  • Maintain high standards of financial ethics, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive data and compliance with all applicable laws

  • Supervise the Accounts Payable Specialist and Accountant, monitor workload, efficiency and accuracy. Provide direction and training as needed.


Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.

  • Over 5 years or more of progressive experience in accounting or finance roles, with significant time spent in a controller or senior financial management position

  • Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing accounting software and ERP systems. QuickBooks Online & Filevine experience preferred.

  • Experience in managing financial risks and ensuring compliance.

  • Experience in process optimization initiatives that enhance operational efficiency

  • Experience in trust accounting and managing client trust funds is preferred.

  • Strong Excel skills are required.

  • Keen attention to detail and accuracy in managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.

  • High standards of integrity and confidentiality are critical.

  • Candidates must be available to work fully on-site, Monday to Friday.
