Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency with accounting ERP systems.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting across all entities: GL, AP/AR, payroll, inventory, reconciliations.
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
  • Provide detailed financial statements, forecasts, and analyses to executives.
  • Manage tax compliance and coordinate with external CPA firm.
  • Establish internal controls and documented procedures.
  • Build management reporting with dashboards and KPIs.
  • Lead budgeting/forecasting and rolling forecasts.
  • Manage cash flow and banking relationships, incl. credit facilities.
  • Collaborate with operations to align financial reporting with performance.
  • Develop and coach the accounting team for growth.

Job description

The Controller will oversee and manage accounting activities related to the company’s and its associated entities, fuel and lubricants sales, distribution operations, and services industry. This position ensures compliance with industry and tax regulations, accurate financial reporting and analysis, as well as maintaining a strategic partnership with company ownership.

The core responsibilities and duties associated with this position include, but not limited to, the following:

Key Responsibilities:
Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
  • Own all accounting functions across all entities: general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, inventory accounting, and bank reconciliations. Experience with inventory-based distribution accounting is a meaningful advantage given the company’s fuel and lubricant distribution model.
  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process.
  • Provide executive management with detailed financial statements, forecasts, and performance analyses.
  • Manage all tax compliance obligations and coordinate with the external CPA firm.
  • Establish and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and documented procedures.
  • Manage the accounting team, including direct supervision and active development of the team.
  • Build and maintain a management reporting framework: dashboards, KPIs, and variance analysis tied to operational realities.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process, produce rolling forecasts as conditions change.
  • Manage cash flow, working capital, and banking relationships including any credit facility management.
  • Provide margin analysis across customer segments, product lines, and locations.
  • Track and analyze fuel margins, freight, and operating expenses within the distribution division.
  • Oversee job costing and project accounting for industrial services, including flushing, reliability, and maintenance work.
  • Monitor labor utilizations, material costs, and service profitability for all industrial projects.
  • Implement cost control systems and financial dashboards to improve transparency and decision-making.
Compliance and Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal and state fuel tax laws, financial reporting standards relevant to industrial services.
  • Manage all audits, regulatory filings, and tax compliance (including excise, sales, and environmental taxes).
  • Maintain strong internal controls, safeguarding company assets and preventing financial risk or fraud.
  • Support insurance and risk management, through accurate financial documentation.
Operational & Cross-Divisional Collaboration
  • Work closely with operations, logistics and service managers to align financial reporting with business performance.
  • Oversee job costing systems for industrial services to ensure accurate tracking of expenses and billings.
  • Partner with operations leadership forecast revenue, control costs, and evaluate resource allocation.
  • Provide financial guidance for capital expenditures such as fuel and petroleum products inventory and service equipment.
  • Collaborate with procurement and logistics teams to manage inventory.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing accounting and finance team serving all divisions.
  • Establish clear goals, performance metrics, and accountability systems across the department.
  • Promote a culture of accuracy, efficiency, and integrity within the finance function.
  • Foster collaboration between accounting, operations, and management teams to streamline information flow.
Qualifications:
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
  • Prior experience leading or managing an accounting function.
  • Ability to produce GAAP-compliant financial statements independently, including on a consolidated basis across multiple legal entities (required).
  • Strong proficiency with accounting or ERP systems.
Preferred
  • Fuel, lubricant, energy, or industrial distribution experience.
  • Family-owned or closely-held business background.
  • Multi-entity or intercompany accounting experience.
  • Exposure to M&A financial due diligence or integration.
  • Gulf South regional market familiarity
  • Experience building financial reporting infrastructure.
  • Inventory accounting experience and/or background in inventory-based distribution businesses.
