Job summary

Montium seeks a Controller to serve as a strategic partner to the CFO, overseeing modernization and optimization of accounting operations and financial frameworks for a real estate portfolio. This role blends technical accounting with strategic leadership to maximize portfolio value.

You will lead multi-entity close processes, ensure covenant compliance, and drive data-driven ERP adoption. Strong Excel, CPA preferred, and 5+ years of experience in accounting required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration required.

• 5+ years of accounting experience required, real estate a plus.
• Advanced Excel skills and ERP familiarity expected.

Responsibilities

The Controller will serve as a strategic partner to the CFO, overseeing the modernization, optimization, and execution of the company’s accounting operations and financial frameworks. This role bridges technical accounting excellence with strategic financial leadership to maximize real estate portfolio value and financial operations.

Core Responsibilities

Financial Reporting, Compliance & Analysis

• Direct month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
• Prepare financial packages for lenders and stakeholders to ensure loan and covenant compliance.
• Prepare detailed cash flow projections, income statements, and balance sheets for the corporate entity, investment funds, and individual properties.
• Analyze budget-to-actual variances and provide actionable explanations to executive management and ownership.
• Track and allocate all revenues/expenses into proper accounts for multi-entity consolidations.

Strategic CFO Partnership

• Act as the CFO’s primary deputy on corporate financial strategy.
• Collaborate with executive leadership on capital allocation and investment decisions.
• Modernize traditional accounting workflows and asset-level reporting procedures.
• Help lead the transition toward advanced, data-driven real estate ERP systems.
• Enforce robust internal controls across all corporate and property entities to reduce financial risk.
• Lead and mentor accounting teams.
• Foster a culture of continuous process improvement and accountability.
• Establish clear performance metrics aligned with company milestones.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
• Certifications: CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is highly preferred.
• Experience: 5+ years of accounting experience required. 2 years' experience in an in-house role (real estate industry is a plus)
• Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Excel required. Experience in property management software (e.g. Yardi) is a plus.
