Job summary

Hermes Landscaping, a long-standing Kansas City leader in landscaping services, is seeking a Controller to partner with the CEO and senior leadership to safeguard financial health and drive strategic decisions.

The role oversees accounting operations, job costing, and system improvements while mentoring the accounting team and ensuring GAAP compliance as the company grows.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
• 5+ years leading and developing accounting teams.
• Experience in construction, landscaping, manufacturing, or other job-costing industries is preferred.
• Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and GAAP.

Responsibilities

• Oversee AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, billing, and invoicing.
• Lead month-end close and improve speed and accuracy.
• Build reporting that helps leadership understand performance, not just numbers.
• Improve job costing, margin visibility, and operational reporting.
• Partner with operations to connect financials to real-world performance.
• Identify inefficiencies and implement better processes.
• Lead, develop, and mentor accounting staff.
• Create accountability, structure, and a strong team culture.
• Support year-end close and work with external auditors.
• Maintain compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.

The Role

This is a senior leadership position responsible for the financial health and integrity of the organization. You will work directly with the CEO and executive leadership team to provide accurate, timely, and actionable financial information while strengthening the systems, processes, and people needed to support continued growth.

What You'll Be Doing

Accounting Operations

• Oversee AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, billing, and invoicing
• Ensure accuracy, consistency, and strong internal controls
• Lead month-end close and improve speed and accuracy
• Build reporting that helps leadership understand performance, not just numbers

Job Costing & Business Insight

• Improve job costing, margin visibility, and operational reporting
• Partner with operations to connect financials to real-world performance

Process Improvement & Systems

• Identify inefficiencies and implement better processes
• Help evolve systems and workflows as the company grows
• Lead, develop, and mentor accounting staff
• Create accountability, structure, and a strong team culture

Audit & Compliance

• Support year-end close and work with external auditors
• Maintain compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements

Non-Transactional Accounting Functions

• Lead 401(k) management and administration
• Oversee tax coordination, filings, and compliance processes
• Manage sales commission calculations, tracking, and payouts
• Lead banking relationships, treasury activity, and cash management

Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
• 10+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience
• 5+ years leading and developing accounting teams
• Experience in construction, landscaping, manufacturing, or other job-costing industries is preferred
• Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and GAAP
