Job summary

Holocaust Museum Houston seeks a seasoned Controller to lead finance, accounting, and reporting. You will partner with the CFO and leadership to ensure GAAP-compliant financials, strong internal controls, and timely budgets and audits.

The role requires oversight of payroll, AP/AR, general ledger, and cash flow while developing staff and implementing process improvements in a nonprofit setting. A CPA and nonprofit experience are highly valued.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization.
  • Experience supervising and developing accounting staff preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, audits, budgeting, and financial reporting strongly preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Controller is responsible for the oversight and management of the Museum’s accounting and financial operations. This position ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records, maintains effective internal controls, oversees accounting functions and staff, and supports organizational planning and decision-making through financial analysis and reporting.

The Controller works closely with the Chief Financial & Operating Officer and executive leadership and serves as a key resource for financial management, budgeting, compliance, and operational decision-making.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead and oversee the Museum’s accounting and financial operations.
  • Prepare and coordinate internal and external financial reporting.
  • Manage the annual budget, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
  • Oversee the annual audit, tax filings, regulatory reporting, and other financial compliance requirements.
  • Maintain effective accounting processes, internal controls, and financial systems.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and general ledger functions.
  • Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and investment reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization.
  • Experience supervising and developing accounting staff preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure under pressure, particularly during audits, budget constraints, and other high-demand periods.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods, work at a computer, and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically. Occasional lifting or moving of materials up to 15 pounds may be required. WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates primarily in a professional office and museum environment. Work is typically performed indoors and involves regular interaction with staff, visitors, volunteers, and external partners. The work environment is generally quiet to moderately busy, with periods of increased activity during peak programming or special events.
