Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Manage the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial data.
  • Maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Develop and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with the school’s leadership team.
  • Coordinate and lead the annual financial audit process.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, including tax filings.
  • Maintain compliance with Cristo Rey Network and diocesan financial reporting requirements.
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and tuition collection processes.
  • Manage employee benefits and contracts; maintain insurance.
  • Oversee cash management and forecasting to ensure liquidity for operational needs.
  • Collaborate with CWSP to align billing and collections with program operations.
  • Provide financial analysis to support strategic decision-making by leadership and board.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
  • Participate in long-term financial planning to sustain the mission.
  • Supervise finance and accounting staff and collaborate with leadership on fundraising and donor stewardship.

Position Overview:

The Controller at a Cristo Rey school plays a critical role in managing the school’s financial operations and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. The position supports the mission of Cristo Rey schools by overseeing financial planning, reporting, and control processes to maintain the school’s fiscal health and contribute to its mission of providing a faith-based, college preparatory education to underserved students.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Management:
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Manage the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial data.
  • Maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Develop and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with the school’s leadership team.
Audit and Compliance:
  • Coordinate and lead the annual financial audit process.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations, including tax filings.
  • Maintain compliance with Cristo Rey Network and diocesan financial reporting requirements.
Operational Support:

  • Serve as a staff liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, presenting financial updates and insights.
Who You Are
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, preferably in a nonprofit or educational setting.
  • Skills and Knowledge:
    • Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting practices.
    • Proficiency in financial software and tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Bloomerang, Google Sheets or similar).
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
    • Effective communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to diverse audiences.
