CFS is seeking a Controller to lead the accounting function for a United States–based law firm. You will partner with firm leadership and equity partners, overseeing daily operations and mentoring two staff accountants.

In this role you’ll own cash management, banking relationships, partner payroll, and financial planning, with private office space and flexible work-from-home as the role progresses. A Bachelor’s in Accounting/Finance and prior controller experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
• Controller or senior accounting experience; leadership and mentoring capabilities valued.
• Law firm accounting experience preferred; professional services considered.
• Strong Excel skills; cash-basis accounting and client trust funds knowledge a plus.

Responsabilités

• Oversee daily accounting operations, cash management, bank activity, billing, AR/AP, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Manage payroll reporting for approx. 42 employees, including commission-based payroll for equity partners.
• Maintain proper separation and management of client and operating funds, including IOLTA accounts.
• Lead and mentor two staff accountants while supporting attorneys and firm leadership as a financial resource.
• Support cash forecasting, partner distributions, banking relationships, collections, and external audits.

Target Compensation:

$115,000–$120,000, with potential flexibility based on experience

Key Responsibilities For The Controller

• Oversee daily accounting operations, cash management, bank activity, billing, AR/AP, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Manage payroll reporting for approximately 42 employees, including commission-based compensation calculations for equity partners.
• Maintain proper separation and management of client and operating funds, including IOLTA accounts.
• Lead and mentor two staff accountants while serving as a financial resource to attorneys and firm leadership.
• Support cash forecasting, partner distributions, banking relationships, collections, and external audit activities.

Qualifications For The Controller

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
• Prior Controller or comparable progressive accounting experience; direct people-management experience is not required if you have demonstrated leadership and mentoring capabilities.
• Law firm accounting experience strongly preferred; professional services, public accounting, wealth management, healthcare, or other relevant environments will be considered.
• Strong Excel skills required; experience with cash-basis accounting, client trust funds, commission-based payroll, or ShorePoint is a plus.
