Job description

Controller
Cleveland, Ohio
Lead the Finance Function for a Stable, Well-Established Organization

We're seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations for a long-established organization with an exceptional reputation for stability and employee retention. This is an opportunity to step into a visible leadership role where you'll partner closely with executive leadership, oversee the day-to-day accounting function, and help guide the organization's financial performance.

If you're looking for a position where you can make an impact without sacrificing work-life balance, this is the kind of opportunity that's increasingly difficult to find.

What You'll Do

As Controller, you'll oversee the organization's accounting operations while ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and efficient financial processes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead all day-to-day accounting operations, including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable/Billing, Payroll, and Job Cost Accounting.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Manage revenue recognition and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Oversee multi-entity reporting and financial consolidations.
  • Forecast cash flow and provide financial insights to executive leadership.
  • Ensure timely billing, collections, and vendor payments.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial analyses.
  • Coordinate annual financial statement audits with external auditors.
  • Support tax reporting and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Oversee payroll tax reporting and related compliance activities.
  • Maintain and improve accounting systems and financial processes.
  • Partner with leadership on special projects and operational initiatives.
  • Develop, mentor, and cross-train accounting staff to build organizational depth and continuity.
What We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will bring a combination of strong technical accounting expertise and proven leadership experience.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • CPA required.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Public accounting audit experience is highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and revenue recognition principles.
  • Experience with percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and managing the month-end close process.
  • Multi-entity accounting experience is preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Sage Intacct, or comparable ERP systems is a plus.
The Ideal Candidate

You are someone who enjoys taking ownership of the accounting function while remaining hands-on when needed. You possess strong analytical skills, communicate effectively with colleagues across the organization, and lead by example. You're organized, detail-oriented, and able to balance multiple priorities without losing sight of accuracy or deadlines.

Most importantly, you're looking for a long-term opportunity where your work is valued, your expertise is trusted, and your contributions have a meaningful impact.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out
  • Leadership role with meaningful visibility across the organization
  • Financially stable, well-established business with a long history of success
  • Collaborative, team-oriented culture
  • Opportunity to improve systems and processes while leading an experienced accounting function
  • Sustainable work environment that values planning, professionalism, and balance rather than constant firefighting
  • Long-term career opportunity with an organization known for employee stability and retention
