The Controller will lead GAAP financial reporting, close processes, internal controls, and related accounting activities in a fast-paced environment in Chicago.

You will partner with auditors, lenders, and internal stakeholders to drive accuracy and timely information.

Qualifications

• Technical – Expertise in U.S. GAAP, revenue recognition, consolidations, business combinations, purchase accounting, and technical accounting research.
• Strong knowledge of internal controls, ERP systems, financial reporting and SOX compliance frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual GAAP financial results and record transactions in proper periods.
• Develop, analyze, and interpret accounting information to appraise profitability and fiscal health.
• Establish and maintain accounting policies, processes and internal controls for GAAP compliance.
• Oversee cash forecasting, liquidity management and banking relationships.
• Lead optimization of financial systems, workflows and reporting.
• Support due diligence, purchase accounting, integration, and ongoing accounting for acquisitions.
• Supervise AR and AP processes to optimize cash flow.
• Supervise bi-monthly payroll in collaboration with HR for timely payments.
• Direct financial audits and maintain relations with external auditors; recommend improvements.
• Direct preparation of tax distributions/returns including tax provision and state/local filings.
• Maintain local/state compliance, annual reports, nexus filings and 3rd-party administrator contact.
• Recruit, develop, mentor, and retain staff; promote accountability and continuous improvement.
• Issue timely 1099s for contractors and equity transactions.
• Prepare lender and investor compliance certifications and schedules.

Position Summary

The Controller will implement appropriate controls and processes to ensure timely, complete and accurate financial information and prepare final financial statements with supporting schedules for the guidance of management. The Controller is responsible for providing technical accounting leadership in the application of GAAP to complex accounting issues such as acquisitions, revenue recognition, proper accruals, lender reporting, etc. The successful candidate will possess a solid knowledge of monthly close, internal controls, GAAP and process improvements relating to all accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash flow and general ledger. This position will also need to develop strong relationships with internal and external partners (eg. Auditors, lenders, brokers). Reports to VP, Finance and serves as a key member of the Finance leadership team.

Responsibilities

• Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual financial results in accordance with GAAP. Ensure transactions are recorded in the proper accounting period to ensure accurate accounting records are maintained.


• Develop, analyze, and interpret accounting information in order to appraise operating results in terms of profitability and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.


• Establish and maintain corporate accounting policies, processes and internal controls to ensure compliance to GAAP and new accounting standards.


• Oversee cash forecasting, liquidity management and banking relationships to support operational and strategic objectives.


• Lead the continued optimization of financial systems, workflows and reporting capabilities to support organizational growth and improve efficiency.


• Support acquisition due diligence, purchase accounting, integration activities and ongoing accounting for acquired businesses.


• Supervise the accounts receivable and accounts payable processes to ensure effective cash management.


• Supervise the bi-monthly payroll process, including partnering with HR to ensure all timely and accurate payments are made.


• Direct financial audits, maintain relationship with external auditors and make recommendations for procedural improvements to shorten audit cycle.


• Direct preparation of the tax distributions and returns, including tax provision and associated state/local tax filings, and extensions.


• Maintain local /state organizational compliance including annual reports, nexus filings and point of contact with 3rd party administrator.


• Recruit, develop, mentor, and retain a high-performing accounting team while fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and service excellence.


• Issue timely 1099s for 3rd party consultants and taxable equity transactions.


• Prepare lender and 3rd party investor compliance certification and related schedules.

Qualifications

• Technical – Demonstrated expertise in U.S. GAAP, revenue recognition, consolidations, business combinations, purchase accounting, and technical accounting research. Strong knowledge of internal controls, ERP systems, financial reporting and SOX compliance frameworks.

• Education - Certification: Bachelor’s Degree and CPA or equivalent accounting designation.


• Experience - 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility within a PE‑backed, multi‑state entity.


• Experience leading accounting operations within complex ERP environment (Workday preferred).


• Public Accounting / Big 4 preferred.


• Professional services preferred.
