Job summary

Artemis, a private equity‑backed healthcare services organization, seeks an Assistant Controller to oversee daily accounting operations, manage month-end close across multiple locations, and drive a scalable, accurate finance function in Irvine, CA.

You will lead a growing team, strengthen internal controls, coordinate financial reporting, and partner with cross‑functional partners to support acquisitions and new business initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience.
  • CPA certification and public accounting experience are strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and internal control frameworks.
  • Prior experience in a private equity‑backed organization is preferred; healthcare or healthcare services industry experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the accounting function, including oversight of the month-end close process across multiple locations.
  • Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting packages.
  • Review and approve journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and other key accounting deliverables to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain compliance with U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies and procedures.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Procurement, Operations, IT, Human Resources, and Payroll.

We are a private equity owned healthcare services organization, providing contracted professional services to hospitals and other healtchare verticals. Over the last few years, we have doubled the business through organic growth and acquisitions and are now entering a new phase of the business, including international expansion.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Assistant Controller will oversee the daily accounting operations and help drive an efficient, accurate, and scalable finance function. This individual will be responsible for managing core accounting processes, supporting financial reporting, and ensuring the timely completion of month-end close activities. The Assistant Controller will also play a key leadership role in developing the accounting team, strengthening internal controls, and partnering with cross-functional departments to support the company's continued growth.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative and hands-on accounting leader who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and brings a proactive, solutions-oriented approach to process improvement and team development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the accounting function, including oversight of the month-end close process across multiple locations.
  • Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting packages.
  • Review and approve journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and other key accounting deliverables to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain compliance with U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a trusted accounting resource for cross-functional teams including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Procurement, Operations, IT, Human Resources, and Payroll.
  • Research accounting matters and provide guidance on the appropriate treatment of complex business transactions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, increase efficiency, and enhance the scalability of accounting operations.
  • Recruit, develop, mentor, and manage staff and senior accountants, fostering a high-performing team environment.
  • Analyze monthly operating results, investigate significant P&L variances, and provide meaningful explanations of underlying business drivers.
  • Resolve accounting and operational issues while communicating effectively with leadership and business partners.
  • Support acquisitions by assisting with accounting integration, financial reporting, and related finance initiatives.
  • Partner with the Corporate Controller and department leaders to ensure new business activities are properly evaluated and accurately reflected in the general ledger.
  • Coordinate external audit activities, prepare supporting schedules, and respond to auditor requests.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal financial reporting and tax requirements.
  • Lead or support ERP implementations, system enhancements, and other finance transformation initiatives.
  • Contribute to special projects and strategic initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and internal control frameworks.
  • CPA certification and public accounting experience are strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience leading and developing accounting teams, including remote employees.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience working with ERP/accounting systems.
  • Prior experience within a private equity-backed organization is preferred; healthcare or healthcare services industry experience is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel up to 15% throughout North America.
