Job description

We are conducting a search for a multigenerational single-family office (SFO) located in Charlottesville, VA. The SFO is a full-service organization and executes in several areas including investment management, accounting, tax compliance and strategy, risk management, estate planning, philanthropic support, and lifestyle support. This position directly supports over 100 legal entities (e.g. partnerships, trusts, LLC’s, etc.) and oversees several third-party administrators. We are building a modern, technology-forward back office, and this role offers a rare opportunity to help shape how a sophisticated single-family office operates for the next generation.

Position Summary

The Controller is the financial backbone of the family office, owning the accounting, partnership reporting, and financial operations across a multi-entity structure of trusts, LLCs, partnerships, and operating and investment entities. This is a hands-on leadership role for a CPA who is equally comfortable in the details of partnership accounting and in translating complex financial information into clear, decision-ready insights for the leadership team and outside advisors. The ideal candidate will embrace the pace at which AI is pushing teams to reevaluate how family office services, including back office, are delivered.

Key Responsibilities
Partnership & Multi-Entity Accounting
  • Partnership accounting: maintain books and records, capital accounts, allocations, and distributions across partnerships, LLCs, and related investment vehicles.
  • Own the general ledger and close process across multiple households, trusts, partnerships, and operating entities, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timely reporting.
  • Track and reconcile capital calls, distributions, contributions, and inter-entity transactions, including complex tiered ownership structures.
  • Design and maintain a clean chart of accounts and entity framework that scales as the family’s structure evolves.
  • Produce consolidated and entity-level financial statements, net worth statements, and customized reporting packages for the principal and advisors.
  • Support investment reporting and analytics via close partnership with the investment team.
  • Build and maintain cash flow forecasting and liquidity models to monitor capital calls, distributions, and funding needs.
Tax Compliance
  • Work closely with the leads of finance and tax to coordinate filing of annual tax returns.
  • Gather, organize, and review supporting workpapers and advisor deliverables; identify issues and follow up to resolution.
  • Support estimated tax planning, K-1 tracking, and year-end coordination across entities.
Operations & Controls
  • Manage a small but efficient backoffice team (3 direct reports, total team of 8)
  • Manage bill pay, banking relationships, and treasury operations with appropriate internal controls and segregation of duties.
  • Design and document financial processes, controls, and workflows, bringing structure where needed.
Qualifications
Required
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience, including a controllership or equivalent leadership role.
  • Demonstrated partnership accounting expertise - capital accounts, allocations, distributions, management fees, and multi-entity / multi-tier structures.
  • Experience accounting for trusts, LLCs, and partnerships in a family office, UHNW, or comparable complex environment.
  • Conversant in tax - able to coordinate with external advisors.
  • Strong command of investment and alternative-asset reporting, cash flow planning, and consolidated financial reporting.
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort modernizing the back office through AI and automation - for example, streamlining the monthly close, workpaper preparation, and K-1 tracking.
Preferred
  • Archway experience, or experience with providing a comparable deliverable for partnership accounting, is a significant advantage.
  • Familiarity with family office reporting and investment platforms (Addepar, etc.)
  • Experience with Sage Intacct is useful, though our long-term direction favors a more partnership-focused solution.
  • Exposure to private equity and venture capital, including LP reporting, pacing models, and K-1 workflows.
What We’re Looking For
  • Detail-oriented and accurate, with the judgment to know what matters most to leadership.
  • Discreet and trustworthy - comfortable handling sensitive personal and financial information.
  • A clear communicator who can translate complex financial data for a non-accounting audience.
  • Self-directed and resourceful, able to build structure and operate with limited supervision.
  • Collaborative in working with external advisors (tax, legal, investment, and audit).

Given the sensitive personal and financial information involved, the successful candidate will be subject to a background and reference check.
