Job summary

Serán BioScience in Bend, Oregon seeks a Controller to partner with the Finance team and drive GAAP-compliant reporting. You will mentor staff, manage close processes, and supervise audits while strengthening internal controls across a manufacturing environment.

Experience in cost accounting for manufacturing and ERP initiatives is highly valued; on-site is preferred with hybrid/remote considered for top performers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and CPA licensure required.
  • 10+ years in accounting within medium-to-large firms.
  • Manufacturing or project-based accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience supervising audits by a top-10 firm.
  • ERP transformation experience is a strong plus, SAP fluency advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; high integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting department workflow and mentoring.
  • Ensure GAAP-compliant financial reporting and strong internal controls.
  • Coordinate external audits and regulatory reporting.
  • Manage consolidation of financial data and KPIs.
  • Educate partner departments on finance needs and directives.
  • Lead ERP transformation initiatives and continuous process improvements.

Job description

Founded in 2016, Serán provides our clients with integrated drug product development and manufacturing solutions. Serán takes a science-first approach, using early process optimization and cutting-edge technologies from the start to overcome challenges for the most complex projects and ensure the efficient advancement of drugs to the clinic. Serán has grown to over 200 team members and is expanding manufacturing capacity to over 100,000 sq ft to be complete in 2027.

Serán is seeking a Controller to support the Finance team and growth. The Controller is responsible for accurately tracking and communicating Serán’s financial position to internal and external stakeholders. The role ensures financial outputs are in line with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and informative for partners and decision-makers. Previous experience with cost accounting in a manufacturing environment is prioritized.

On-site is preferred; hybrid or remote work locations may be considered for candidates who can demonstrate the highest level of performance and proficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees daily workflow of the department
  • Mentors team to ensure redundancy of capabilities and development of talent
  • Works with colleagues across the firm to educate partner departments on accounting/finance needs and directives
  • Oversees accounting training program and identifies training needs
  • Recruits, interviews, hires and trains new staff
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy
  • Planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting operational functions
  • Maintaining and improving internal controls
  • Ensures accurate internal and external financial statements and presentations, reflecting the firm’s operations
  • Ensures processes that substantiate financials are performed at a level to mitigate risk and satisfy an audit by an independent accounting firm
  • Structuring and maintaining managerial accounting practices and KPIs
  • Manages the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data
  • Develops, monitors and summarizes business performance metrics in critical areas essential to ongoing growth
  • Partnering with stakeholders to contribute to company-wide and cross-functional initiatives
  • Educates partners on downstream financial impacts of decisions and tracks results post-implementation
  • Processes that drive continuous improvement by designing and reinforcing efficient accounting processes
  • Coordinates activities of external accounting auditors; oversees regulatory reporting, including tax planning and compliance
Qualifications
  • Solid working knowledge of GAAP
  • Ability to close monthly financial results and present them without difficulty
  • Strong facility with accounting software and enterprise systems; SAP experience is a strong advantage
  • Ability to accept feedback and constructively manage conflict
  • Exceptional mentoring and leadership skills
  • Highest integrity and ability to handle confidential information
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Multitasking ability and flexibility in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional Excel skills and proficiency with payroll, AP, AR, timekeeping, banking, project management, and related accounting tools
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in accounting; active CPA licensure required
  • Ten+ years of proven accounting experience in a medium-to-large firm
  • Experience in manufacturing and/or project-based accounting
  • Experience supervising audits conducted by a top-10 audit firm
  • Firm understanding of financial and managerial accounting principles
  • Experience architecting and implementing an ERP transformation is a strong plus
  • SAP fluency is a strong advantage
Physical/Work Environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Adheres to a consistent and predictable work schedule
