Job summary

PEMEX Deer Park is seeking a Control Systems Engineer to lead instrumentation and control efforts for assigned production units at the Deer Park refinery. The role focuses on implementing and maintaining advanced control strategies, DCS configurations, and SIS assurance to ensure safe, reliable 24/7 operations.

The candidate will collaborate with maintenance, operations, and project teams, handling complex control systems while advancing process safety and reliability across the site.

Qualifications

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • B.S. or higher in Chemical, Electrical, Control, Mechanical or other relevant engineering field.
  • At least five years of related experience in process control engineering, including DCS configuration and support.
  • Experience with Emerson DeltaV and/or Honeywell DCS.
  • Knowledge of P&IDs, loop wiring diagrams, and troubleshooting methods.

Responsibilities

  • Focal point for instrumentation and control systems issues for the assigned production team.
  • Configure and improve the Distributed Control System (DCS) in their units.
  • Perform proactive technical monitoring of the Base Layer Controls ensuring reliable and optimized operation.
  • Maintain and develop complex loop operations and associated documentation.
  • Perform assurance activities for installed SISs.
  • Active participation in MOC processes and support for unit turnarounds.

Job Summary

The Control Systems Engineer (CSE) is a key position in the I&PC Department, deployed to support a given Production Team, providing functional leadership, technical support, and strategic planning in the Process Automation, Control and Optimization discipline. The CSE, in partnership with the Control Systems Specialist, enables Operations to safely and efficiently control operating units using our process control tools and equipment, including field instrumentation, DCS hardware, base layer controls, complex controls, advanced multi-variable predictive controllers, and SISs all in the spirit of maximizing site profitability.

The CSE role is a highly collaborative and dynamic position and successful candidates must be able to work alone and as part of a team. You will interface with multiple teams across the site including maintenance crafts, operators, production support, other discipline personnel, contract engineers, and vendor/manufacturer’s representatives, as well as multiple levels of the leadership organization to enable the safe and reliable 24X7 operation of the site.

The CSE is a key member of their assigned Production Team and they are accountable for base layer performance and long-term reliability of their units. Technical challenges that will be encountered by the CSE include supporting:

  • Equipment spread over a large geographical area,
  • A mixture of equipment ranging from the old legacy systems to the very newest technologies, and
  • A plethora of technologies such as real-time closed loop control, supervisory control, advanced control, real-time optimization, and safety instrumented functions.

Success in this role is maintaining excellent process safety performance, reducing control and instrument reliability incidents, enforcing engineering standards, improving standardization of equipment and configuration while planning for and reducing obsolescence, and responding to, anticipating, and meeting Operation’s needs. The engineer must thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment and use prioritization skills to balance urgent short-term work with crucial long-term objectives.

The position provides opportunities to sharpen instrument and analyzer technology and troubleshooting skills with practical field experience. Additionally, the role has growth potential through business case development and presentation opportunities, and capital project work process.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
  • Focal point for instrumentation and control systems issues for their assigned production team.
  • Configure and improve the Distributed Control System (DCS) in their units.
  • Perform Proactive Technical Monitoring of the Base Layer Controls assuring reliable and optimized operation.
  • Maintain and develop complex loop operations and associated documentation.
  • Perform assurance activities for installed SISs.
  • Active participant in improving the DCS alarming performance for their production team.
  • Active participant in the Management of Change (MOC) work process.
  • Provide input and support for execution of unit Turnarounds
  • Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) participant providing guidance for Preventative Maintenance tasks and participating in RCM studies.
  • Capital Project consultant for unit changes.
  • Must have or develop a minimum of knowledge competence in the Process Control Domain (PCD) / Operational Technology (OT) domain including the dangers and risks associated with the process control domain while being an active caretaker of the PCD.
  • Must have or develop a minimum of knowledge competence in Process Safety Management (PSM) including PHAs and SISs.
Qualifications:
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • B.S. or higher engineering degree (e.g., Chemical, Electrical, Control, Mechanical or other relevant engineering branch).
  • At least five (5) years of related experience in:
  • Process control engineering.
  • DCS (Emerson DeltaV and/or Honeywell) configuration and support.
  • Control theory, applications, and engineering documentation (P&IDs, loop wiring diagrams) and troubleshooting methodology.
  • General instrumentation and/or process analyzer (QMI) experience.

Skills and Experience:

  • Skill level competence in Process Automation System Engineering and particularly around DCSs (specifically on Honeywell Experion).
  • Advanced control strategies.
  • Knowledge of safety reviews (PHA, LOPA, etc.).
  • Knowledge of data analytics and visualization tools.
  • Ability to decompose complex problems to ensure timely and accurate resolution of system anomalies before they impact operations.
  • Ability to learn new concepts and technologies quickly.
